The Phenix Megalodon is a dedicated offshore jigging series made for large pelagic species, bluefin and yellowfin tuna, amberjack, GT, and similar heavy-pulling fish, using vertical metal jigs. It is made for sportboat and charter anglers who need a rod that can handle sustained heavy loads without blank failure. Phenix rates it as one of their top-performing jigging rods and it has a track record in West Coast tuna fisheries. Blanks combine T12 and T40 carbon fiber technologies.
T12 adds toughness and shock absorption at the butt while T40 keeps blank weight down. Guides are Fuji KWSG K-frame guides. Reel seats are Fuji; handles are high-density EVA split grip. A swivel gimbal is fitted at the butt. Models rated to PE 2-6 and PE 6-10 cover the range from mid-weight jig work to full-power tuna applications. Power ratings are encoded in the last digit of the model number (6 = PE2-4, 7 = PE3-5, 8 = PE4-6, 9 = PE6-10 based on typical Phenix coding; exact specs require product-page confirmation).
Twelve models split between 5'6" (MPX-566 through MPX-569) and 6'0" (MPX-606 through MPX-609) lengths in both casting (overhead) and spinning configurations. The heavier numbered models (568/569, 608/609) appear in spinning; casting covers the full power range. The 6'0" blanks provide slightly more leverage and stroke for heavier jigs; the 5'6" models are more common on crowded sportboats where blank length is a consideration.
Deeper Dive
A closer look at notable models.
Heaviest-rated 5'6" casting model. PE6-10 range; designed for large bluefin and big amberjack where maximum stopping power is needed at short blank length.
Lightest spinning model. PE4-6 range; suited to casting-assisted jigging techniques where spinning tackle is preferred for distance and coverage over structure.
Lightest casting model in the series. PE2-4 range suits medium jigs and yellowtail-class fish at moderate depths; compact 5'6" length works well on crowded sportboat rails.
Heaviest-power spinning model at 6'0". PE6-10; used by anglers who prefer spinning reels for jigging speed or one-hand technique on heavy tackle. Carries the same PE10 ceiling as the heaviest casting model.
Heavy PE4-6 6'0" casting model. Adds leverage over the 5'6" for deeper drops or when more rod stroke is desired; confirmed fish to 150+ lbs in user reports.
Heaviest 6'0" casting model, PE6-10. Maximum-power blank for the largest tuna serves; the longer blank provides additional lifting arc compared to the 5'6" 569.
