釣蝦, prawn fishing, is one of Taiwan's most distinctive angling formats and has almost no Western equivalent. You pay for a session at an indoor or covered pond stocked with giant freshwater prawns, sit at the rail, and fish a tiny rod with a fine leader and a small float. The rods are about two metres, they lock at several lengths, and they carry a lump of counterweight in the butt that can exceed a hundred grams.
A prawn pond is a social venue as much as a fishery. Sessions are sold by the hour, ponds often run late into the night, and many have a grill on site so the catch is cooked and eaten where it was caught. That format shapes everything about the tackle.
The fishing itself is close and delicate. A baited hook goes down on a fine leader under a small float, and the take is a hesitation rather than a pull, because a prawn picks at a bait rather than running with it. Striking too early or too hard loses it, so the tackle is built to show a subtle bite and to lift a light animal cleanly rather than to fight anything.
Zoom is what makes the rods work. Prawns shift around a pond through a session, and a rod that locks at three lengths lets an angler follow them without moving seat or re-rigging. The maker code names those lengths directly, so a regular reads a rod by the span it covers.
Balance is the other obsession. The rod is held out one-handed for a long evening, so makers load the butt with 29 g to 108 g of counterweight to bring the pivot into the palm. On a rod this short those are large numbers, and makers quote them up front.

Where it comes from
Prawn ponds grew out of Taiwan's aquaculture industry, which farms the giant river prawn in quantity, and turned it into a leisure format that now anchors a whole evening economy. The venues are commercial, covered, open late and built around groups, which is a very different proposition from a riverbank at dawn.
Because the fishery is entirely artificial and entirely close-range, the tackle evolved along lines that would look strange anywhere else. There is no casting and nothing to reach, so length is a tool for positioning a bait rather than for distance, and it is adjustable on the rod itself. There is no fight worth the name, so no drag, no reel and no power rating. What is left to engineer is bite detection, which is why tips run as fine as 0.7 mm, and comfort over hours, which is why the counterweights are so heavy.
The unit vocabulary came from Japan and stayed intact. Rods are sold in 尺, the same shaku used on hera rods, and leaders in 号. This is the one place in this catalogue where a shared unit really does mean the same thing across two traditions, which is worth noting given how often 号 and the H hardness grades do not.

Choosing a prawn rod
Buy the zoom range, not a single length. The maker code tells you which 尺 sizes a rod locks at, so a 5/6/7 covers 1.5 m, 1.8 m and 2.1 m. Match the span to the pond, since following prawns around it is most of the game.
Start at 7尺 or 8尺 if you are choosing blind. Those two sizes, 2.1 m and 2.4 m, carry the great majority of the range and suit most pond layouts.
Go fine on the leader. The band is 0.2号 to 1.5号, roughly one pound to six. Nothing here fights hard enough to need more, and a heavier leader costs you bites.
Treat the counterweight as a comfort spec. Between 29 g and 108 g sits in the butt to bring the balance point back to your hand. Heavier is not worse: on a rod held out one-handed for an evening, where the weight sits matters far more than what it totals.
Check the collapsed length if you travel to the pond. These pack down to between 36 cm and 46 cm, small enough for a shoulder bag.
