About Taper & Shape
TAPER & SHAPE Co., Ltd. is a boutique Japanese rod maker founded in 2005 and run by rod designer Yasuo Shimazu, who develops every blank around one idea stated plainly on the site: a rod functions by bending. The catalog is built from two lines. Curvester is the graphite line, and Glassway is the glass line, including tubular and 100 percent pure-glass blanks. Both are made in Japan and aimed at trout, area trout, light salt, and bass anglers who fish close and read the blank by feel.
The graphite construction is called 統一弾性, unified-modulus. Every graphite sheet wrapped into a tubular blank shares the same modulus, with no abrupt modulus change along the length. Action comes from the mandrel and the sheet taper, not from layering stiff and soft materials, so the blank bends faithfully to its taper for a smooth, continuous curve. Light, sharp handling is a product of taper design rather than chasing the highest available modulus, which is why Curvester uses T24 24-ton and mid-modulus T24 grades rather than ultra-high-ton sheets.
The range covers Japanese-trout C3JT and big-trout C3BT, the Area tact Vivace area rod, the CROSSER finesse rod, the Bay heart and Blue barrel salt rods, and the Jewel bird offset-handle rod, alongside Glassway's Japan Trout V family, Area area V, the Maki mono bass-glass rods, and the Namoto X minnow rod. Components include Fuji T2 titanium-frame SiC-S guides, the original F.L.C. guide system, and zebrawood reel seats.
What Taper & Shape is known for
Two parallel construction philosophies under one designer: the unified-modulus (統一弾性) graphite of Curvester, where the action is shaped by taper alone, and the tubular and pure-glass blanks of Glassway. The core focus is trout, through the Japan Trout V glass rods and the T24 graphite C3JT, extended into area fishing (Area tact Vivace, Area area V), bass (the Maki mono glass cranking rods), and light salt (Bay heart boat seabass, Blue barrel shore game, Namoto X). Fuji T2 titanium guides, the F.L.C. spinning guide system, and zebrawood reel seats run across the line. Anglers cross-shop it against Huerco, Valkein, Mukai, Smith, and Anglo & Co.
