How jigging is fished

The core method is vertical. The boat holds over structure or a mark, the jig goes down on braid until it hits bottom or the sounder's fish, and the angler works it back with the rod and reel together. There is no cast, so rod length is set by what is comfortable to pump for hours rather than by distance, which is why the median here is six and a half feet.

That is one method among several, and the branches genuinely differ. Slow-pitch loads the blank and lets it unload so the jig flutters and falls, and the take usually comes on the drop; the rods are heavier-rated and much softer than their weight suggests. Light jigging is the same vertical idea scaled to shallower water and finer braid. Shore jigging leaves the boat altogether and casts from rock or beach, which is why its rods average nearly ten feet against six and a half for everything else.

Line is braid throughout, rated in 号, and the assist rig rather than a treble is the norm: hooks on short cord at the head of the jig, so a fish that takes on the fall is still connected. Daiwa and Shimano run deepest here, but the range of makers is unusually wide for a Japanese-named fishery, which is what a method that travelled looks like in a catalogue.

Where it comes from

Vertical jigging with metal is old and close to universal, but the modern form is Japanese and the vocabulary that came with it is what this page is organised by. The rods arrived as a class in their own right once braid made it possible to feel a jig at two hundred metres and to lift a fish on line thinner than the leader.

Slow-pitch is the branch that changed the tackle most. Built around the jig falling rather than rising, it needed a blank soft enough to load on the lift and springy enough to release, which is a different object from a fast vertical rod even at the same gram rating. It arrived with its own vocabulary, and makers label it plainly.

Shore jigging went the other way, taking the metal jig and the assist rig and putting them on a long casting rod. It is the only branch here fished from land, and the catalogue reflects that in every spec: longer, lighter, and rated for a jig you can throw rather than one you can drop.

The name travelled further than most. Makers outside Japan label rods for it in the Japanese term rather than translating, which is why this discipline holds brands from Taiwan, Korea, Italy, Indonesia and the United States alongside Daiwa and Shimano.
