About Whiplash Factory

Whiplash Factory is a Japanese rod builder whose catalogue grew out of raigyo — snakehead fishing over matted vegetation, a discipline that demands rods stiff enough to set a hook through a frog and strong enough to winch a fish clear of cover. The Serpent Rising family is the brand's snakehead line proper, now in its third generation, and the company describes it as a deliberately maniacal, hardcore alternative to more standard rods in the category.

The rest of the range follows the brand's own travel. Planner and developer Kuniaki Shinke's targets diversified as he fished abroad, and the Raw Dealer family answers the problem of carrying one rod that has to cover several strategies and survive an unexpectedly large fish. Raw Dealer rods aim at total ability rather than specialisation, balancing stiffness against give; the company characterises its heavier models as strong rather than hard. Head Gunner came from a trip to the Russian Far East, built with local anglers' requests in mind for northern snakehead from an inflatable kayak, and is shorter and lighter than a typical raigyo rod — poor in heavy cover by the brand's own admission, but well matched to light cover and small canals.

Construction runs to mid- and high-modulus carbon composites, with several models using an irregular two-piece design so a travel rod keeps single-piece behaviour. Whiplash publishes unusually complete specifications, and grades power and taper on an in-house scale.

What Whiplash Factory is known for

Heavy-cover snakehead rods and travel blanks for oversized freshwater fish. Whiplash Factory sits at the hardcore end of the Japanese raigyo scene, where rods are built to drag snakehead out of matted vegetation on braid, and it extends that engineering into travel models aimed at the exotic species its own expedition reports document across Asia, South America and Africa. The catalogue is small and deliberate — five families, most under ten models — and unusually well documented, publishing closed length, tip and butt diameters, balancer weight and rear-handle length for every rod. Power and taper are graded on the company's own scale rather than the usual UL-to-XH vocabulary.
