Black carp (Taiwan pond) Rods 烏鰡

Black carp are the heavyweight of Taiwan's pond fisheries. They grow large, they feed on hard-shelled food and they pull accordingly, so the tackle built for them is short, stout and rated for line that would not look out of place at sea. The rods take a reel, run under four metres, and are graded by a class number in 号 that tells you exactly what leader to fish.

How black carp is fished

The angler fishes a stocked pond from a fixed position, presenting a bait on the bottom where black carp feed. There is a reel, so line can be given and recovered, which matters because these fish do not give up quickly and a pond only offers so much room to work them.

The fish shapes the tackle completely. Black carp have powerful pharyngeal teeth for crushing snails and mussels, they run heavy, and they are the largest thing most Taiwanese pond anglers will hook. That is why the leaders climb to twelve 号 and the butts reach past twenty-six millimetres, figures that would look absurd on the prawn pole being fished at a venue down the road.

Sessions run in the same commercial pay-to-fish format as the island's other pond fisheries, and the same makers supply all of them. What changes is scale rather than culture: the format, the venues and the vocabulary are shared, and only the tackle diverges to suit the fish.

Rods collapse to between 95 cm and 116 cm, so even a stout three-metre blank travels easily. Prices sit between three and six thousand New Taiwan dollars, which puts them among the more expensive pond rods on the island without approaching what a Japanese ayu or hera rod costs.

Where it comes from

Black carp are farmed across East Asia and stocked into Taiwanese ponds as a high-value target, and the angling that grew around them borrowed its grading convention from the rest of the maker's catalogue rather than inventing a new one.

That convention is worth dwelling on because it is the clearest in this catalogue. A rod is sold as a class in 号, and the leader range printed alongside it always brackets that class. There is no separate power word, no casting weight and no taper code. One number tells a buyer what the rod is and what to put on the reel, and the ladder from 6号 to 12号 covers the whole fishery.

It is the same idea as the IGFA line classes used on Mediterranean traina rods, arrived at independently and written in a different unit. Both traditions concluded that for a rod whose job is applying pressure rather than casting, the most useful thing to publish is the line it is matched to.

Within Taiwan's pond family this is the heavy end. Prawn rods fish leaders of a fifth of a 号 and carry counterweights to stay comfortable; crucian rods sit not much heavier. Black carp rods share their makers and their pond venues with those ranges, and almost nothing else. Series names carry the intent plainly enough, with Commando and Suspect alongside 大怪黑鰡, which reads roughly as the big monster black carp.

Choosing a black carp rod

Choose the leader first, and let the class follow. The two are the same scale, so deciding to fish 10~12号 tells you to buy a class 11 rod. It is the fastest decision path in this catalogue and there is no conversion to do.

Expect heavy line by pond standards. The range spans 3~6号 up to 10~12号, which at roughly 4 lb per 号 in nylon means about twelve pounds to forty-eight. Black carp are the reason, and undergunning them in a pond full of other anglers is how tackle gets lost.

Take the length as given. Everything here sits between 2.69 m and 3.61 m, and the spread is narrow because the fishing is close-range and vertical. Pick for the pond's layout rather than for reach.

Note the butt diameter if you are comparing to other pond rods. These run past 26 mm with 2.4 mm tips, against the sub-millimetre tips on prawn and crucian tackle. It is the same maker and the same pond culture building for a completely different animal.
