Specimen fishing is the pursuit of large individual fish of coarse species, and the tackle reflects that it is a goal rather than a single method. A specimen angler may be after big barbel one week and big bream the next, so the rods sit between the carp, barbel and feeder ranges and borrow rating conventions from all of them.
The approach follows the fish. Specimen anglers target known large individuals or known good waters, and the tackle is chosen for the fish and the ground rather than for a fixed method. That can mean a static bait on the bottom with an alarm, a large feeder cast to a river crease, or a float fished for big roach in a gravel pit.
What is common is that the fish are large for their species and often heavily fished, so end tackle tends toward the fine while the rod stays capable. Where it comes from
Specimen hunting is the older tradition from which modern carp fishing separated. Before carp became a sport in its own right, anglers pursuing big fish of any coarse species were specimen hunters, and it was that world which produced the test curve as a rating.
As carp fishing grew into its own market, it took the test curve with it and standardised around twelve and thirteen foot rods. Feeder fishing meanwhile standardised around casting weight in grams. Specimen fishing, which never narrowed to one method, kept a foot in both, which is exactly why the rods in this catalogue split between the two conventions.
That is not untidiness so much as an accurate reflection of what the category is. A specimen range will contain a rod meant to fish a big bait static, rated in pounds of test curve, alongside one meant to launch a large feeder to a far bank, rated in grams.

Choosing a specimen rod

Choose by the fish and the ground. This is a goal rather than a method, so the useful question is what you are actually targeting and how far out it lives, not where the rod sits in a range.
