Pond lobster (Taiwan) Rods 龍蝦

Taiwanese pond venues stock spiny lobster and mud crab, and the tackle is its own category: a short pole, no reel, and a heavy lump of counterweight in the butt. Both makers file these under 龍蝦竿, lobster rods, and publish little beyond a length, a tip diameter and that counterweight figure.

How pond lobster is fished

The format is the commercial pond format Taiwan runs everywhere: a venue, a session sold by time, a fixed position at the rail, and a fixed-line pole with no reel.

What separates it from the prawn ponds is the quarry. Protako names the targets outright as 龍蝦, 沙公 and 蟳母: spiny lobster, and male and female mud crab. Those are marine and estuarine animals, so the water is salt or brackish rather than fresh, and what comes up has claws and a shell.

That shows in the tackle as stiffness and as ballast. Protako describes its 墨龍 blank as 特硬, extra hard, and the butt carries a counterweight measured in hundreds of grams. Both make sense for a pole held out over the rail against an animal that sets itself into the bottom and stays there.

Beyond that the catalogue is honest about how little is specified. There is no published leader range, no stiffness grade and no class, so the choices actually available to a buyer are length, stowed size, tip diameter and counterweight.

Reading the numbers

The number on the rod is 尺, and reading it as metres is the trap

  • The code 3.2/4.6/5.8 is a zoom set in 尺: about 0.97 m, 1.40 m and 1.76 m
  • ⚠ Read it as metres and you get a 5.8 m pole that does not exist. 4 sections, 54-57 cm stowed
  • A second family is sold at one fixed length, about 1.2 m to 1.8 m
  • Counterweights run about 33 g to 300 g, the heaviest butt loads in this catalogue
  • No leader, class, stiffness, line, lure or power rating is published on any of them

Where it comes from

Lobster ponds and prawn ponds sit in the same commercial tradition, and the tackle shows the family resemblance: fixed line, no reel, zoom on many models, and a butt counterweight to make a long session comfortable.

Where they diverge is load. Prawn poles carry counterweights of a few tens of grams. These run to 270 g and 300 g, on blanks built stiff to match, and the fine tips that a prawn rod uses to read a delicate bite are replaced on some models by a choice of two top sections so one rod covers more than one job.

Both makers here are Kaohsiung firms, based in the same district, and both give the category its own heading in the catalogue. The series names follow the local habit of theatrical Chinese naming, with 墨龍 and 猛龍 reading as ink dragon and fierce dragon, alongside 螫刺, a sting.

It is recorded as its own discipline because the makers sell it as one, which is the rule this whole layer follows: where a maker names a fishery, that name decides.

Choosing a pond lobster rod

Decide first between a zoom set and a fixed length. One family locks through the 3.2/4.6/5.8 尺 set, roughly 0.97 m, 1.40 m and 1.76 m, and stows to around 54 cm. The other is sold at a single length between about 1.2 m and 1.8 m. Zoom buys you reach you can change mid-session; a fixed rod is simpler and there is no code to decode.

Read the model code as 尺. A rod listed as 5.8 is 5.8尺, about 1.76 m. One maker prints that code under a column headed in metres, so if a listing appears to offer a 5.8 m pole that stows to 56 cm on four sections, it is the units that are wrong.

Check the counterweight before anything else. Published figures span about 33 g to 300 g, which is a wider spread than any other spec here. On a pole held out from a fixed position, that difference is what you feel for the whole session.

Use tip diameter for the fine end. Tips run from 0.6 mm to 2.4 mm. Some models ship two top sections of different stiffness, which is worth having when the same venue holds both lobster and crab.

Treat the missing ratings as missing. Other Taiwanese pond disciplines publish a leader range in 号 and a grade of some kind. These publish neither, so match terminal tackle to the venue and the quarry, because there is no printed figure to match it to.
