About Tsunami Lures

Tsunami Lures is a Japanese topwater specialist founded in 1998 by Masami Motoki, who started by carving wooden surface plugs and later extended the brand into rods built for those lures. The rod line favors short blanks, roughly 5 feet 3 inches to 6 feet, in materials that suit slow, loaded casting: E-glass on the Yabusame, S-glass on the Sasuga, a glass-core carbon composite on the Sukiyaki, and full carbon on the Moderno. Each rod uses the brand's own ferrule joint and original SIC-ring guides, and ships in a cotton pouch.

The rods are tuned for working 5/8 to 2 oz wood and plastic surface plugs, including delicate pencil skating on PE line, the stated design intent behind the Sasuga No.1 56. The Yabusame is the brand's first original rod, designed around twenty years ago and reissued at a 21-year milestone. Documented release dates place rod production from at least 2015 (Sasuga No.1 56, December 2015), with later additions such as the Tashinami glass series at the end of 2023. Models are short enough for kayak, float-tube, and tight overhanging cover. Pricing runs roughly 37,000 to 45,000 yen plus tax per rod.

What Tsunami Lures is known for

Short glass and glass-carbon topwater bass rods in the vintage Japanese plugging tradition. The line centers on E-glass and S-glass blanks of about 5 to 6 feet, built around the maker's own ferrule joint and original SIC guides, and rated for 5/8 to 2 oz surface plugs. The rods grew out of Tsunami Lures' wooden topwater plugs and target slow, loaded casting and pencil skating, including PE-line presentations. They appeal to topwater bass anglers and collectors who want a glass plugging rod rather than a fast graphite all-rounder.
