Ajing is Japanese light-tackle fishing for aji, horse mackerel, on a jighead that often weighs less than a gram. The rods are short and extraordinarily light, because the entire problem is casting almost nothing and feeling a bite that barely registers.
The ground is harbour walls, piers, breakwaters and the lit water around them, usually after dark. Aji hold near light lines where they feed on small prey, and the standard presentation is a tiny soft plastic on a jighead, cast, allowed to sink, and retrieved slowly enough to stay in the zone.
The bite is the difficulty. An aji inhales and rejects in the same motion, and on a sub-gram jighead there is almost no weight for that movement to register against. So the whole rod is built as a bite indicator: extremely light, extremely fast in the tip, with a blank that will load on a gram of lead and a handle that puts the hand close to the blank so the take arrives through the grip.
Once hooked, an aji is soft-mouthed, which pulls the design the other way. Too stiff a tip and the hook tears out. The compromise between a tip fine enough to read a take and forgiving enough to keep a hook in is what the solid-tip and tubular-tip builds are two different answers to.
Boat ajing is the branch: heavier jigs, deeper water, bigger fish, and a rod that has little in common with the harbour-wall version beyond the target.

Where it comes from
Aji has been eaten in Japan for as long as there has been fishing there, and taken on bait tackle for just as long. What is recent is the decision to pursue it as a lure discipline, on tackle refined specifically for it, which happened through the 2000s alongside the wider Japanese light-game movement.
It fits a particular set of circumstances. The fishing is urban and accessible, available from public structures at night, cheap to start and open to anyone with a short rod and a box of jigheads. That combination produced a large participant base quickly, and a large participant base produced a tackle market willing to argue over tenths of a gram.
The results are in the catalogue as full ladders rather than single models. Shimano's Soare and Daiwa's Gekkabijin each run from an entry blank to a flagship, with the two of them accounting for well over half the discipline here. Gekkabijin, 月下美人, means beauty under the moon, which is a reasonable summary of where and when the fishing happens.
The related Japanese light-game values sit close by. Mebaru, rockfish, is fished on much the same tackle and several ranges are sold for both at once, which is why a series like Daiwa's Aji Mebaru X names two fisheries in one breath.
Choosing a ajing rod
Start between 5'6" and 6'6". The median rod here is 6'5". Shorter gives control and bite detection at close range off a wall; longer buys casting distance and line control if you need to reach past structure.
Buy for the jighead weight you actually fish. A rod rated to 8 g will technically cast a 0.6 g head, but it will not load on it, and loading on almost nothing is the job. If you fish sub-gram, buy a rod rated for sub-gram.
Settle the tip question with the maker, not with us. Solid tips bend into a take and suit a slow, slack presentation; tubular tips transmit it and suit a tighter one. It is the most argued-about property in the discipline and it is not a field this catalogue holds.
Check whether a rod is a boat model before comparing ratings. Anything rated past about 15 g is almost certainly boat tackle, and it is not a heavier shore rod so much as a different tool.
Assume fine line and rig accordingly. PE 0.3号 to 0.8号 or 2 lb to 4 lb mono covers the discipline. The blank is doing the shock absorption, so a rod that feels too soft in the shop is often correct on the water.
