The Smith Troutin' Spin Il Flusso (イル・フルッソ, Italian: "the flow") is a JDM high-end trout rod series from Smith Ltd. Made for native stream and river trout fishing in Japan using lure (spinning) technique. Introduced in 2019 as the flagship of Smith's Troutin' Spin lineage, it addresses stream trout specialists across a broad range of field conditions, from tight mountain headwater streams (kebari, kei-ryu style) to large river and wading environments. At ¥54,000–¥70,000 per rod, this is positioned at the premium JDM stream trout market. Not suitable for anything other than light trout lure applications.
All models are 2-piece spinning rods on 30-ton or 40-ton Toray graphite + glass composite blanks, the glass addition providing resilience and a smoother bend curve that aids soft-lure presentation without snap rejection. Titanium SiC-S ring guides throughout (SiC top only); guide placement tuned individually per model per blank action. Reel seat uses a down-lock design with cork/wood on the fore-grip; the down-lock hood is engraved with "OLTRE IL FLUSSO" (Beyond the Flow). New-design grip balances ease of holding during long sessions with casting stroke support. Models with suffix BTS are bottom-touch spinning (botto-tachi style) for river/lake; TR models are standard stream casting.
Seven models spanning 4'8"–8'8", all spinning, all Moderate-Fast action, split between L and M power. Short models (TILF-48TR, TILF-53TR at 4'8"–5'3"/Light) target confined mountain streams with tight casting windows. Mid-length models (TILF-67TR, TILF-72TR at 6'7"–7'2"/Light) cover river and wading applications. Long models (TILF-83TR, TILF-87BTS, TILF-88TR at 8'3"–8'8"/Medium) handle large rivers, long casts, and the BTS model is specifically built for bottom-touch spoon technique.
Deeper Dive
A closer look at notable models.
Designed for confined small mountain streams (keiryu / small tributary zones) where casting space is minimal. 4'8" length, lures to 8g, line to 6lb. Enables pin-point casting in tight cover with minimal backcast room. Handles spoons, spinners, small minnows, and shads.
Standard small-stream model, the mid-length compact option for mountain/tributary environments. Lures to 8g, line to 6lb. Responsive tip for twitching; soft-loading blank facilitates high-accuracy short casts. Heavier sinking minnows, spoons, spinners all within range.
River and wading model step-up. At 6'7"/Light, lures to 12g and line to 8lb. Noted by Smith for spoon control via rod-tip work and subtle jerk actions on minnows. Flexible tip for soft presentation; stronger lower section for fish control in current.
The BTS (bottom-touch spinning) specialist model. 8'7"/Medium power for river seabass-style trout: sensing contact with river bottom through the tip (bottom-touch technique), long-distance casting, and fighting large wild trout. Smith specifies spoons 15–20g+ and notes this handles heavier over-20g spoons well. 40-ton blank material vs. 30-ton on other models.
Longest TR (standard cast) model at 8'8"/Medium for large rivers requiring maximum casting distance and approach precision. Lures to 28g, line to 14lb. Handles spoons, vibration, divers, and large minnows; strong enough for large wild trout in powerful current.
