About Mirna Mora

Mirna Mora is a small Australian tenkara company owned and run by Colin Perkovic with business partner Barrington Black, an industrial designer, and its rods are handmade and individually tested in Melbourne. The name means calm seas in Croatian. Perkovic came to tenkara after a lifetime of angling, and after fishing traditional Japanese rods began building his own blanks to get a more robust rod for tight, heavily timbered water. The company's stated aim is a simpler and tougher fixed-line system, and a secondary one is to push the method onto species and water outside its Japanese origins: its guides cover redfin, snapper, mangrove jack, barramundi, Murray cod and golden perch, and its rods are fished on streams, estuaries, flats, sheltered beaches and from kayaks.

Unlike most tenkara rods the six models are pieced rods with ferrules rather than telescopic, which the maker credits with better sensitivity, longevity and casting. Each is listed with a fly-line weight equivalency and a taper. The Marbi (11 ft, 5 pieces, 81 g, 3 to 4 wt) is the all-rounder and best seller. The Wandiligong (10 ft, 63 g, 2 wt) is the lightest and the Cherry Walk (10 ft, 64 g, 3 wt) the versatile stream rod, both 4-piece. The Red 10 (10 ft, 88 g, 7 wt) is built for snapper and golden perch from small craft, and the Jackbug (10 ft, 92 g, 10 wt, fast taper) carries a double handle for mangrove jack, Murray cod and barramundi. The Trek (9 ft, 7 pieces of 43 cm, 69 g, 5 wt) is the packable rod.

Rods sell direct from the company's store at A$280 to A$490, alongside flies, leathers, rigs and tackle, and the company runs workshops and guided experiences.

What Mirna Mora is known for

The Marbi is the best seller and the rod the company points new anglers to, an 11 ft all-rounder for streams through beaches; the Jackbug, with its double handle and 10 wt equivalency, is the rod that defines the brand's push toward mangrove jack, barramundi and Murray cod. Mirna Mora is known for handmade Melbourne construction, for ferruled multi-piece tenkara rods instead of telescopic ones, and for applying the fixed-line method to Australian saltwater and predator species. In this catalog it is the only Australian tenkara maker and sits alongside the US makers Tenkara USA and Zen Tenkara.
