The Grappler Type Slow J is a dedicated slow-pitch jigging rod built on Shimano's Spiral X and Hi-Power X blank construction, redesigned with a new taper engineered specifically for the deliberate lift-and-fall cadences of slow-pitch technique. The blank features a soft tip and ultra-parabolic action, which loads through most of the blank's length during the lift phase and releases energy smoothly on the drop, generating the wide, fluttering fall that slow-pitch jigging relies on for strikes.
All current Slow J models measure 6'6", a length Shimano describes as two inches shorter than the prior generation, which reduces blank stress during extended sessions and puts less physical demand on the angler. The CI4+ Full Holding Reel Seat is a carbon-fiber-reinforced design that wraps the reel foot fully, improving energy transfer along the blank and delivering more tactile feedback compared to a standard fixed reel seat. Spiral X and Hi-Power X construction maintain torsional stability throughout the parabolic load cycle without adding blank weight.
The lineup spans four power ratings from ML to H, all at 6'6" and rated for 10-20 lb to 20-40 lb PowerPro depending on model. The two additional models from prior generations (GRPSJC68ML and GRPSJC68M at 6'8") are not listed on the current page and may represent an earlier configuration. Current models are priced at $329.99 each.
Deeper Dive
A closer look at notable models.
6'6" Heavy casting blank rated for 20-40 lb PowerPro, the highest power rating in the current Slow J lineup. Suited for deeper water and heavier jigs where line resistance and current require a stronger blank to complete the lift cycle and drive hooks on larger fish.
6'6" Medium casting blank rated for 15-30 lb PowerPro, same 1"/2" grip configuration. Steps up from the MLA for slightly deeper applications or heavier jigs while retaining the parabolic taper. Covers a broad range of nearshore slow-pitch scenarios with a mid-power, versatile load curve.
6'6" Medium Heavy casting blank rated for 15-30 lb PowerPro, sharing the MA's line class but with added power through the mid and lower blank sections. The stiffer MH rating provides more authority on the lift stroke and handles fish that run hard after the hook-set without compromising the slow-pitch taper.
6'6" Medium Light casting blank rated for 10-20 lb PowerPro with a 1" foregrip and 2" rear grip, 16" total grip length. The lightest power in the series, suited for shallower water slow-pitch work with smaller jigs where a very soft load curve produces maximum flutter on the drop.
6'8" Medium casting blank from the prior generation Slow J lineup, sharing the longer length with the 68ML. The M power rating handles a moderate jig weight range for slow-pitch technique, providing a balance of load sensitivity and lifting capacity before the redesigned 6'6" platform replaced this length.
6'8" Medium Light casting blank from the prior generation Slow J lineup. The two additional inches compared to current 6'6" models extend the stroke arc for the lift phase. Rated for lighter line classes consistent with ML designation, suited to shallower slow-pitch applications and finesse jig weights.
