The Tallus PX Conventional is a single-piece bluewater casting rod built on Shimano's Hi-Power X blank construction, which wraps diagonally-laid carbon tape in an X-pattern over the outermost blank layer. This process reduces blank ovalization and twisting under load, resulting in a lighter, more rigid structure compared to conventionally wound blanks. Energy transmits efficiently from butt to tip, which translates to increased casting distance and improved lifting power when fighting heavy pelagics.
The lineup spans ten conventional models ranging from 6'0" to 7'0" in powers from Medium through Extra Extra Heavy, covering mono line ratings from 15 lb up to 80 lb. All conventional models carry a Fast action. Hardware throughout consists of SeaGuide Zirconia ring guides paired with diamond-wrap EVA grips sized for conventional reel seats. Foregrip lengths run 10 to 13 inches; rear grips measure 12.5 to 13 inches depending on model.
The ten spinning models (TLXS prefix) cover 6'9", 7'2", and 8'0" lengths in Medium through Extra Heavy powers, with mono ratings from 15 lb to 50 lb. Spinning-specific foregrips measure 6.2 to 7.1 inches with longer 14.3-inch rear grips to suit two-handed offshore retrieve. All models in both variants carry an MSRP of $259.99.
Deeper Dive
A closer look at notable models.
6'0" Fast Extra Heavy conventional rated 40-60 lb mono. Compact length suits heavy standup or rail fishing situations where leverage and short stroke casting are prioritized. XH power handles large surface poppers and live baits for tuna-class fish.
6'0" Fast Extra Extra Heavy conventional rated 40-80 lb mono. The heaviest power in the 6-foot class, designed for maximum pressure on large pelagics from a short, stiff blank. Longer foregrip (13") vs. the XH version accommodates a higher grip position.
6'6" Fast Heavy conventional rated 30-50 lb mono. Steps up from the MH for heavier live baits and larger lures. The 6'6" length gives added casting stroke over the 6'0" models while keeping a manageable overall length from a fighting chair or rail.
6'6" Fast Medium Heavy conventional rated 20-40 lb mono. Mid-range power in the 6'6" class suits live-bait presentations and lighter chunk fishing where some blank flex aids hook-ups. Covers the mid-tier of the bluewater conventional lineup.
6'6" Fast Extra Heavy conventional rated 40-60 lb mono. Balances casting reach with backbone for pelagic species in the 40-60 lb class range. Useful for live-lining large baits or working heavy knife jigs vertically in the 6'6" length.
6'6" Fast Extra Extra Heavy conventional rated 40-80 lb mono. The most powerful 6'6" model, intended for heavy live-bait fishing and larger offshore species. Rated to 80 lb mono and 200 lb PowerPro braid.
6'9" Fast Heavy spinning rated 25-50 lb mono. Foregrip extends to 7.1" vs. 6.2" on lighter models, reflecting the heavier load management. Suited to larger lures and live baits for species in the tuna and wahoo class.
6'9" Fast Medium spinning rated 15-30 lb mono. Lightest power in the 6'9" spinning class, designed for smaller pelagics and medium-weight lures on spinning tackle. Compact overall length relative to the 7'2" models gives better control in close-quarters situations.
6'9" Fast Medium Heavy spinning rated 20-40 lb mono. Adds backbone over the M model for larger lures and stronger fish. The 6'9" length is a common choice for jigging and live-bait spinning in moderate to heavy bluewater conditions.
6'9" Fast Extra Heavy spinning rated 30-50 lb mono. Heaviest power in the 6'9" spinning class. At 30-50 lb mono it targets large surface lures, heavy stickbaits, and powerful offshore species where short-length spinning control is needed.
7'0" Fast Heavy conventional rated 30-50 lb mono. One of the core 7-foot models, this Heavy power handles a broad range of offshore lure and bait work. Rear grip extends to 13" to provide solid two-handed leverage on bigger fish.
7'0" Fast Medium conventional rated 15-40 lb mono. Lightest power in the 7-foot conventional class, suited to smaller tuna, mahi, and wahoo on lighter live baits and smaller lures. Longer length aids casting distance from deck.
7'0" Fast Medium Heavy conventional rated 20-40 lb mono. Pairs the 7-foot length with medium-heavy backbone for a versatile offshore conventional covering chunk baits, lighter jigs, and live mackerel or bonito rigs.
7'0" Fast Extra Heavy conventional rated 40-60 lb mono. The longest and one of the most powerful conventional models in the series. Extra reach is useful for longer casts to breaking fish or kite-fishing presentations.
7'2" Fast Heavy spinning rated 25-50 lb mono. Longer foregrip (7.1") and the 7'2" length provide good leverage for sustained fights on larger fish. This model sits in the middle of the spinning range as a general-purpose heavy bluewater spinning option.
7'2" Fast Medium spinning rated 15-30 lb mono. Extra length over the 6'9" models improves casting distance for schooling pelagics farther from the boat. Lighter power keeps the blank lively for smaller tuna and mahi presentations.
7'2" Fast Medium Heavy spinning rated 20-40 lb mono. A versatile mid-range model combining the reach of the 7'2" length with Medium Heavy power. Useful across a range of offshore spinning techniques including live-bait fishing and surface iron.
7'2" Fast Extra Heavy spinning rated 30-50 lb mono. Maximum power in the 7'2" spinning class. Covers heavy surface lures and large live baits on spinning tackle, with the 7'2" length aiding extended casts to feeding fish.
8'0" Fast Heavy spinning rated 25-50 lb mono. Longest and heaviest-power model in the spinning lineup. Foregrip measures 7.1" with a 14.3" rear grip, configured for two-handed offshore casting and kite fishing with heavier line classes.
8'0" Fast Medium Heavy spinning rated 20-40 lb mono. Longest model in the Tallus PX lineup. The 8-foot blank is specifically suited to kite fishing and long-range casting presentations from a center console or sportfisher deck.
