The Palms Surfstar is a Japanese shore casting series for surf and rock fishing, made for flatfish, sea bass, and large coastal predators from sandy beaches, rocky points, and breakwaters. It is produced by Palms (Angler's Republic brand) and distributed primarily in Japan with limited international availability. The series suits experienced shore anglers who fish structured surf zones and need precise lure control in wind and wave conditions. Lure windows of 3/8–2oz across most models address a wide range of metal jigs, minnows, and surface lures. Blanks use high-modulus carbon with titanium-frame guides throughout, Palms notes a proprietary guide spacing pattern designed to maximize blank performance instead of follow standard spacing conventions.
The lineup splits into two structural families: standard single-piece models (SSFS-9x, SSFS-10x, SSFS-11x) and FL (Flat Line) variants sharing the same lengths with marginally expanded lure ceilings, plus SS (Shore Slow) paired models at the 9'9" length. The SS variants feature modified tip sections tuned for slow-falling or bottom lures. A separate S-prefix sub-series (SSFS-S93ML, SSFS-S103M+) gives anglers shorter, lighter builds for finesse surf or smaller-profile lure work. Fourteen models total, all spinning, spanning 9'3" to 11'2". Three length families (9'8"–9'9", 10'3"–10'6", 11'2") carry a consistent M+ power rating on the primary models.
The 9'9" group carries three power/line options (SSFS-991 through SSFS-993) covering 6-30lb, providing a graduated set of options for light to heavy surf work at the same length. FL variants pair with the M+ family for slightly heavier presentations; SS variants pair with the 991/992/993 series for slower lure styles.

A closer look at notable models.
Shortest model in the series at 9'3" ML; lighter line and lure range than the M+ family. Suited to finesse shore presentations, smaller lures, or situations requiring more tip sensitivity.
Heaviest of the 9'9" trio at 8-30lb and 1-2oz; serves larger coastal predators or heavier metal jigs in faster current. Paired with the SSFS-993·SS variant which has a marginally wider lure ceiling (1 1/16–2 1/8oz).
Longest standard model at 11'2"; extra length for casting distance on open beaches. M+ power keeps lure versatility consistent with the mid-length models while maximizing trajectory.
