The Sylpher 4th Generation is Palms' flagship premium trout rod series, positioned at the top of the Japanese manufacturer's freshwater lineup. Anglers here are experienced native trout fishers, stream, river, and lake, who prioritize sensitivity, casting precision, and material refinement over entry-level price. The series sees continued use in both Japanese mountain streams and for migratory species like sakura-masu (cherry salmon). Retail pricing ranges roughly ¥44,000–¥58,300 (before tax), placing these firmly in the premium domestic JDM category. The 4th Generation introduces two distinct blank constructions across the lineup. The 'Future G. Shooter' models are pure high-modulus graphite: light, fast-recovering, low-vibration blanks designed for high-speed lure delivery and precision casting.

The 'Flex Crossover' (CV prefix) models use a glass/graphite hybrid construction, glass material in the main blank with a graphite tip section spliced on. This 'crossover' design is intended to deliver the hook-retention advantages of glass (reduced hook pull due to higher stretch) without the casting sluggishness typically associated with solid glass. All guides are titanium-frame, set in a field-tested position pattern unique to each model. Reel seats feature maple wood and silver aluminum with double-lock screws; butt ends use natural wood with a laser-engraved aluminum cap. The 16 models cover spinning (9), baitcasting (2 graphite + 2 glass casting), and 4-piece pack models (5).

Lengths range from 4'6" to 8'3". Power runs XUL through MH. The 4'6"–5'6" XUL/UL models (both graphite and Crossover) target headwater and spring-creek fishing where short accurate casts matter most. The 5'3" SYSSi/SYSCi graphite and SYCVi/SYCVCi Crossover variants offer multiple blank-material options at the same length for angler preference. The 6'6"–8'3" spinning models scale up to mid-river, main-stem, and lake use with ML–MH power for larger trout and occasional sea-run fish.

A closer look at notable models.

SYCVi-46XUL/P4 Casting · 4'6" · XUL

4-piece Flex Crossover spinning pack rod at 4'6" XUL; pack length 38 cm. Palms describes it as the choice for backpacking into unknown headwaters and source streams where no car access exists. Among the shortest travel rods in the JDM premium trout category.

SYSSi-411XUL Spinning · 4'11" · XUL

2-piece graphite XUL spinning rod; Palms describes it as suited to machine-gun short casting in tight headwater and source-stream environments. Rod weight 59 g. Intended for XUL spoons and spinners on light tippets where stealth presentation matters.

SYCVCi-53UL Casting · 5'3" · UL

2-piece Flex Crossover baitcasting rod, same glass/graphite hybrid as the spinning Crossover but in baitcast configuration. Rod weight 84 g. The /P4 suffix variants of these same designs are 4-piece pack versions for travel.

SYCVi-53UL Casting · 5'3" · UL

2-piece Flex Crossover spinning rod; glass main blank with graphite tip. Palms notes the glass stretch reduces hook pull on treble-hook lures like spinners and surface plugs. Rod weight 74 g vs 62 g for the graphite SYSSi-53UL, the weight cost of the hybrid construction.

SYSSi-83MH Spinning · 8'3" · MH

Longest and most powerful model in the series at 8'3" MH; pure graphite. Palms specifies it for large-river main-stem, lake shore, and sea-run trout (sakura-masu) where long casts with heavier spoons are needed. Rod weight 119 g.
