Carnage III is Penn's flagship multi-purpose saltwater rod family, the third generation of a line that has been a Penn staple for offshore-to-inshore work over the past decade. It is positioned to cover almost everything a saltwater angler does from a boat or beach, with sub-lines for offshore stand-up, jigging, slow-pitch jigging, inshore, surf, and general boat work. Penn is owned by Pure Fishing and Carnage III is the model line most often seen on charter boats and party boats up and down the US coasts.
Construction uses two different blank technologies. The Inshore models use SLC2, an inner spiral carbon wrap with outer longitudinal carbon fibers for a strong, balanced inshore rod. Every other sub-line uses SLS3, a thin-diameter graphite blank tuned for heavier offshore, jigging, surf, and nearshore work. Components are Fuji K-Guides, Sea-Guide and Fuji reel seats, and rubber shrink-tube grips that hold up to saltwater. Lengths run from short 4'5" offshore stand-up bent-butts up to 13' surf rods.
About 61 models across the six sub-lines, identified by the prefix between CAR and III in the model number. CAROSIII is Offshore Stand-up (short, heavy, for tuna and billfish), CARINIII is Inshore (snook, redfish, speckled trout), CARBWIII is Boat (general bottom and live bait), CARJGIII is Jigging (vertical jigging for grouper, tuna, kingfish), CARSPJIII is Slow Pitch Jigging (Japanese-style), and CARSFIII is Surf (8'6" to 13' for sand-beach casting). Pricing roughly $190 to $290.
