The GXR Bass is St. Croix's combo-focused bass rod series, designed as rod-and-reel system paired with SEVIIN GXR reels, the combination won Best Rod and Reel Combo at ICAST 2024. The rods themselves target freshwater bass anglers running technique-specific setups across the standard tournament bass fishing presentation range: all-around casting, heavy cover, finesse spinning, and stick bait. The system is marketed as a matched performance package instead of a standalone rod series.
Blanks use St. Croix's SCII carbon fiber, a step below their premium SCIV and SCV blanks but well-regarded for the price tier. Guides are hybrid stainless steel, compatible with all line types including fluorocarbon and braid. Handle design is split-grip with premium cork; reel seats are blank-through nylon with black stainless and nylon hoods. Two-piece travel variants are available in select models. Construction is Oconto, Wisconsin, USA, domestically built within the St. Croix lineup.
The lineup is 4 casting and 4 spinning models. Casting covers 7'1", 7'2", and 7'4" lengths in MH and H power; includes one 2-piece. Spinning covers 6'10" and 7'1" in ML, M, and MH power; includes one 2-piece. Line ratings are 6-65 lb across the range, broader than most single-series lineups. Lure weights are 1/16 to 1 1/2 oz.
Deeper Dive
A closer look at notable models.
Only 6'10" model and the finesse-specialist of the spinning lineup. XF action combined with ML power suits drop shot, Ned rig, and shaky head work. The wide 6-20 lb line range accommodates both fluorocarbon and light braid. A shorter, quicker-tipping rod than the 7'1" models.
Two-piece variant of the primary MH casting model. Functionally identical to GXRC71MHF-C but breaks down for travel or storage. St. Croix designates 2-piece models with the '2' suffix. The matching F action and specs confirm no performance compromise versus the 1-piece.
Heaviest casting model. The 65 lb line ceiling is unusually high for a bass rod and indicates this is a heavy cover/punching setup, punching mats or flipping thick grass where PE braided line to 50-65 lb is common. The 7'4" length aids lever force during hooksets in heavy cover.
