St. Croix Legend Black is a premium ice fishing rod series designed for panfish, perch, and walleye with an emphasis on bite detection through a proprietary spring-indicator system. The target angler fishes through the ice in shelter or open-ice conditions where visual strike detection supplements hand feel. The 24" and 30" lengths are exclusive to ice fishing applications. Blanks use precision-taper solid carbon construction, solid blanks transmit vibration more directly than tubular blanks, which is the primary reason ice rod builders favor them at this length.
The defining component is the black anodized, high-tension coil spring strike indicator, which is more sensitive than standard spring bobbers and is fully adjustable and interchangeable. A secure-lock reel seat with EVA trim and Pac Bay Minima stainless-steel guides with black anodized frames complete the build. Handcrafted in Park Falls, Wisconsin. Carries a 1-year warranty (shorter than St. Croix's open-water Legend series). Seven models total, all spinning, across two length groups: four 24" models (UL, ML, L, M) and three 30" models (ML, L, M).
The 24" group provides more compact options for sitting over the hole in a shelter; the 30" models add sweep for playing fish on longer runs. Powers from UL to M cover the full range of ice panfish, perch, and walleye presentations. No XUL or MH models, the series stays within the standard panfish-to-walleye range.
Deeper Dive
A closer look at notable models.
Compact M-power option for anglers who prefer a shorter rod for tight shelter use but still need the backbone for walleye. Trades sweep distance for reduced tip-to-hand distance, which some anglers prefer for jig control.
Lightest model in the series. 24" UL suits the most delicate panfish presentations, tiny jigs and waxworms for crappie and bluegill. The coil spring indicator at this power level catches strikes that would otherwise be felt only as slight weight changes.
Heaviest and longest model. The 30" length with M power is practical for walleye, using heavier jigs or spoons at depth. Added length improves hookset leverage and line control when fighting larger fish in tight hole conditions.
