The Legend Elite Salmon & Steelhead is St. Croix's flagship in-hand (non-extended handle) spinning series for West Coast steelhead and Pacific salmon anglers. It serves experienced river anglers who drift, cast spinners, or throw light hardware on medium to heavier presentations. The series is sold as the lightest and highest-performing salmon/steelhead rod in the St. Croix catalog with traditional cosmetics, meaning premium cork, understated finish, instead of the bold color schemes found in some other series. Blanks are SCV (super-high-volume) carbon fiber with FRS (Fortified Resin System) in the lower section for additional reinforcement.
Technology stack includes IPC (Integrated Poly Curve tooling), ART (Advanced Reinforcing Technology), and TET (Taper Enhancement Technology), all of which contribute to reduced weight, improved sensitivity, and consistent action consistency across the taper. Guides are Fuji Torzite with corrosion-proof titanium frames, the lightest, lowest-friction ring available. Handle is super-grade cork with premium EVA butt cap. 15-year transferable warranty. MSRP runs $685–$725, stepping up with length. The lineup is 11 spinning models, all 2-piece fast action, covering 8'6" to 9'6" in 3 length groups (8'6", 9', 9'6").
Each length group gives anglers ML, M, MH, and H power, with 8'6" lacking an ML, making it effectively a 3-power group. This gives anglers a systematic choice: shorter and stiffer for close-range heavy water, longer for distance and line mend, with power matched to target species and water type.
Deeper Dive
A closer look at notable models.
Shortest heavy model. 8'6" H suits anglers fishing tight runs or bank-heavy water where a 9-foot rod would be unmanageable. 1/2–2 oz lure range covers large spinners, heavy jigs, and cured roe rigs for Chinook and coho.
Lightest 9-foot option. ML with 6–10 lb line and 1/8–5/8 oz lure range is the summer steelhead or smaller river coho configuration, where lighter presentations and more rod feel on the strike are preferred over raw power.
Longest and heaviest model at $725. Extra length benefits anglers fishing large rivers where line mend and drift control over current seams are critical. H power handles kings and larger coho in high-water or heavy current conditions.
