The St. Croix Musky X is a dedicated musky casting series built on SCII carbon fiber blanks with the Fortified Resin System (FRS) for added strength-to-weight performance. The series positions itself as an accessible entry point into St. Croix's musky lineup, below the Legend Elite Musky in price and materials, but featuring genuine technique optimization and St. Croix's North American manufacturing. MSRP runs $195–$310. All models are calibrated for musky presentations specifically. No spinning models; all 18 are casting.
The series divides into two handle styles: full-grip (FG prefix, 9 models) with premium cork and EVA, and split-grip (SG prefix, 9 models) with EVA only. Both styles are available in the same length/power combinations, giving anglers a choice based on feel preference. Telescopic variants (T suffix: MXFG86HFT, MXFG90HFT, MXFG96HFT, MXSG90MHFT, MXSG96MHFT) collapse to 92–96" for travel or kayak use without sacrificing blank integrity. Guides are stainless steel frames with aluminum oxide rings; reel seat is nylon with stainless steel hardware.
Length range: 7'6" to 9'6". Powers: MH and H, with two XH models for large rubber and oversized lures. Lure weights: 3/4–6 oz in MH models, 2–8 oz in H, up to 8–24 oz in 9' XH (MXFG90XHF). The MH split-grip models (MXSG prefix, MHF-labeled) carry 65-80 lb line and 3/4-6 oz lure range, suited for bucktails and medium crankbaits. H and XH full-grip models handle 65-120 lb line for big glide baits and heavy rubber.
Deeper Dive
A closer look at notable models.
The lightest-powered 8' model. The 3/4-3 oz range covers spinner baits and smaller bucktails for anglers who prefer lighter tackle or are fishing pressured fish with smaller presentations.
The lone moderate-fast action rod in the series. MF action loads more gradually than F, benefiting jerkbait and glide bait presentations where a pause-and-pull cadence is required.
The most extreme rod in the lineup. An 8-24 oz lure range is reserved for the largest rubber and glide bait presentations. The 9' length provides leverage for launching oversized lures at distance.
Longest rod in the series and telescopic. The 9'6" telescoping full-grip model suits anglers traveling to remote musky water who need full-size performance in a compact transport package.
