The Tenryu Rayz Spectra is the flagship tier of Tenryu's Rayz trout series, made for precision lure anglers pursuing wild trout in Japanese mountain streams, mid-river basins, and lakes. It is built for spoon, minnow plug, and small jig presentations, not bait or fly fishing. The intended angler is a skilled JDM trout specialist who prioritizes sensitivity, blank quality, and technique-specific tuning over price. The series is among the most expensive trout lure rods on the domestic Japanese market.
Blanks are 98% carbon with CNT (Carbon Nanotube) reinforcement in the butt section, addressing the brittleness-versus-lightness trade-off inherent in high-elasticity carbon. Guides are titanium-frame K-series (T2 color) with Torzite rings except the top guide (SiC), compatible with both mono and PE line. The reel seat ring is knurled for wet-hand grip. The grip uses natural wood combined with Nishijin textile carbon pipe, an artisan construction detail. Rod weights run 59g to 112g across the range.
All models are two-piece. Note: the batch lineup (RZS51LL, RZS53LML, RZS61LL, RZS71ML, RZS77MMH, RZS82M plus the baitcast RZS51LL-BC) reflects the previous generation; the manufacturer's current 2026 catalog has been completely renumbered with new model codes. Six spinning models plus one baitcasting variant. The lineup runs 5'1" to 8'2", L to MH power, the short models (5'1"–5'3") are mountain stream close-quarters tools; longer models (7'1"–8'2") handle mid-river and lake work.
Deeper Dive
A closer look at notable models.
The only baitcasting model in this batch lineup. A 5'1" baitcaster for trout is a JDM-specific configuration suited to tight mountain stream casting where baitcast control improves accuracy on short lobs. Uses small-diameter micro guides per the 2026 spec notes.
Heaviest and most powerful spinning model before the 8'2" M. At MH/7'7" it handles cherry salmon, large yamame, and lake-shore jigging, a versatile mid-to-large river rod that the Tenryu site's 2026 successor calls the 'Spartan Custom for the Wild,' named after Kamchatka Mikija trout.
Longest model in the lineup but M instead of MH power, optimized for distance casting on large rivers and lake shores where reach matters more than raw fish-fighting leverage. The softer tip compared to RZS77MMH aids control of lighter spoons at range.
