The Bigwater Conventional series is Ugly Stik's multi-application saltwater platform made for offshore, surf, and nearshore boat anglers made for a broad range of species, from small coastal species on light drail rigs to large bluewater fish on heavy conventional setups. Line ratings across the 12-rod lineup run from 6 lb up to 40 lb, reflecting significant range from finesse bottom work to medium-heavy boat fishing. Blanks use Ugly Stik's established Ugly Tech construction, a combination of graphite and fiberglass that prioritizes durability over low weight.
The Clear Tip design (a clear fiberglass section at the tip) adds flex and impact resistance. Guides are Ugly Tuff one-piece stainless steel, which eliminates insert pop-out risk common with ring guides in saltwater use. Reel seats are Fuji. Handles are EVA foam. These rods are sold as a durable, value-oriented tool; construction trade-offs include higher blank weight compared to carbon-only rods. The lineup covers five distinct applications signaled by model code suffixes: standard casting (BW prefix), downrigger (BWDR), double-duty (BWDD), and surf (BWSF).
Lengths span 5'6" to 11', and power runs Light to Heavy. Two long models (9' and 10') target downrigger salmon and lake trout. The 11' BWSF2040C112 is the only surf-specific model at H power.
Deeper Dive
A closer look at notable models.
Shortest model in the lineup; compact for boat use in tight quarters, vertical jigging, or dropping rigs. MH power at 5'6" provides fast lifts on bottom species.
Downrigger model at 8'3"; Light power and 6–20 lb rating targets trout, kokanee, and small salmon in lake trolling applications. The longer blank keeps lines spread when multiple downrigger rods are deployed.
Longest downrigger option, same 6–20 lb rating as the 8'3" model. The extra length gives more line angle separation and a softer tip for detecting subtle strikes from suspended fish.
10' medium-power model designated 'double-duty'; likely intended for dual use as a longer boat rod or surf/pier application. Broadest line range of the non-surf models at 12–30 lb.
The sole surf-specific rod in the series at 11' with a heavy rating; handles heavier sinker rigs and large cut bait for surf species like stripers, drum, and sharks. Conventional reel seat distinguishes it from the Bigwater Spinning lineup.
