This batch entry combines two distinct offshore boat casting series from Major Craft's Giant Killing lineup: the GK1 (1G grade, entry-level) and GK5 (5G grade, upper-mid). Both are offshore saltwater casting rods designed for boat-based pelagic fishing -- made for yellowtail, amberjack, Spanish mackerel (sawara), bluefin tuna, GT, and similar species using poppers, diving pencils, and metal jigs. These are not freshwater or inshore rods. The target angler fishes from party boats or private vessels in Japanese coastal waters or equivalent offshore environments.

GK1 uses intermediate-modulus (torque-focused) carbon in a down-lock reel seat configuration; the design philosophy emphasizes fatigue reduction and forgiving action over all-out sensitivity. GK5 uses Toray T1100G (the strongest in Toray's lineup) with R360 multi-directional carbon layup, made for a performance tier significantly above GK1 in blank stiffness-to-weight ratio and casting precision. Both series use Fuji K-frame SIC guides. GK1 is priced at approximately 18,000-22,000 JPY; GK5 at 37,000-45,000 JPY, reflecting the blank material difference.

The 17 combined models break down as 11 GK1 casting models (including 3 new 2-piece center-cut variants added June 2026) and 6 GK5 casting models. GK1 lengths run 6'7"-8'2" with R and RF actions; the 6'7" and 7' models handle up to 50-60g lures for lighter inshore pelagics, while the 8'2" heavy models (power ratings 5-8) handle up to 160g for large tuna and GT. GK5 runs 7'4"-8'2" RF action only, with blank weights from 134g to 310g and higher drag ratings than equivalent GK1 models.

Deeper Dive

A closer look at notable models.

GK1C-67/2 Casting · 6'7" · R action

Shortest model in the combined series at 166g and MAX 50g lure. Manufacturer notes describe it as a technical boat-casting tool for low-freeboard vessels where underhand casting in confined deck space is required. Serves small-to-medium pelagics (mackerel, bonito) from charter boats with low clearance.

GK1C-702/2 Casting · 7' · R action

One of three new center-cut 2-piece models added to the GK1 lineup in June 2026. Storage length is 112cm. Major Craft states the 2-piece is tuned to match 1-piece feel. Serves light coastal pelagics at MAX PE 2.0 / MAX 50g. Practical for travel and shared boat storage.

GK5C-74/2 Casting · 7'4" · RF action

Entry point into the GK5 T1100G tier. At 134g it is the lightest model across both series. Configured for small-to-mid pelagics (PE MAX 2.0, MAX 50g) from party boats. The T1100G blank at this weight class provides casting feedback and lure action sensitivity not achievable with the equivalent GK1.

GK5C-82/8 Casting · 8'2" · M · RF action

The GK5 flagship: MAX 160g, 15kg drag, PE MAX 8.0, 310g blank weight -- 38g lighter than the equivalent GK1C-82/8 (348g) despite identical lure ratings. T1100G with R360 construction. Manufacturer serves GT, large yellowfin tuna, and 40kg+ bluefin.

GK1C-82/8 Casting · 8'2" · RF action

Heaviest GK1 model: MAX 160g lure, 15kg drag, MAX PE 8.0. Manufacturer serves large amberjack exceeding 20kg, yellowfin tuna, and 40kg-class bluefin. Same lure and drag specs appear in the GK5-82/8 at 348g vs 310g -- the weight difference reflects the T1100G blank advantage.
