The Major Craft Black Porgy 5G (BP5) Chinning Game model is a Japan-specific shore series for chinu/kurodai (black sea bream) lure fishing, a technique called chinning that involves casting light lures to harbors, rocky shoreline, and shallow flats. Techniques include free-rig (freefall jig), rubber jig, surface plugs, and slow-roll rigs over boulder and oyster-bar structure. The series is made for shore anglers made for kurodai with finesse setups, not as a general bass or saltwater rod. Blanks use Toray T1100G carbon as the main cross-ply with R360 construction, identical to other Major Craft 5G-grade products.
Guides are Fuji SiC-S rings, chosen to balance sensitivity and casting distance. The reel seat design emphasizes grip-palm contact for tactile bottom detection. All models are 7'8" 2-piece with 121 cm folded length, and all share a consistent ML or M power class, neither is a light-power finesse rod nor a heavy specialist. Rod weights run 96–104 g. The six models split evenly between spinning (BP5S) and baitcasting/bait (BP5B) formats, and within each format further divide by tip type: tubular (チューブラー) in ML and M, and solid tip (ソリッドティップ, S-prefix) in ML only.
The solid-tip ML at Fast action serves high-pressure areas requiring sensitive bite detection; the tubular ML at RF suits general-purpose use; the tubular M at RF handles heavier rigs and longer-range work. The equal number of spinning and bait models reflects chinning's split preference between casting distance (spinning) and accuracy-focused bottom probing (baitcasting).
Deeper Dive
A closer look at notable models.
The heaviest tubular baitcasting model; M power at 4–20 g suits free-rig and heavier bottom exploration. The bait format allows precise skipping to overhang structures, and RF action transmits bottom substrate changes through the blank.
Solid-tip baitcasting model; combines bait-reel accuracy for pin-spot bottom work with the solid tip's sensitivity advantage for detecting light bites from finicky kurodai in structured zones.
High-sensitivity solid-tip spinning model. The fast solid-tip suits pressured areas where subtle bites from cautious kurodai require immediate detection. Good for free-rig and jig-head presentations at distance on thin PE line.
