This is Major Craft's cross-grade Light Shore Jigging model from the Crossride (XR) series, encompassing the same LSJ application across four grade tiers: XR1 (1G entry), XR3 (3G mid), XR5 (5G upper-mid), and XR7 (7G flagship). All models target shore-based anglers casting metal jigs and plugs from breakwaters, jetties, and surf for pelagics, saba (mackerel), sagoshi (Spanish mackerel), yellowtail, hairtail (tachiuo), and similar coastal serves. The LSJ (Light Shore Jigging) designation differentiates from full shore jigging; lure ranges stay at 15-50g (roughly 1/2-1 3/4oz).
All blanks use Regular-Fast (RF) action, a design choice consistent across all four grades, RF provides a loading tip for casting and plug work while the butt retains sufficient power for bluefish-class species. Higher grades (XR5 and XR7) incorporate Toray T1100G prepreg carbon for reduced weight while maintaining stiffness. XR5 rods weigh 127-155g versus XR1's 163-190g at equivalent lengths, a meaningful difference over a full day of casting. Fuji SiC guides throughout; reel seat varies by grade (ACS at entry, DPS/VSS at higher grades). XR1 is priced at ¥16,200-17,200; XR5 at ¥31,500-33,000.
Ten models span two grades with three-model lineups each at XR1 and XR5 (9'4" ML and 9'6"/10' M), plus two models each at XR3 and XR7 (9'6" and 10' M only). All are 2-piece spinning rods; all share 9'4"-10'0" length range. The ML models (942ML) across grades target SLSJ, 10-30g jigs for smaller species, while M models (962M and 1002M) handle standard LSJ at 15-50g. The 10' models favor surf and high-platform casting where extra reach improves distance and angle to the water.
Deeper Dive
A closer look at notable models.
Upper-mid grade (5G) ML model at 127g, 36g lighter than the XR1 equivalent length. Incorporates Toray T1100G carbon. The weight difference is noticeable after hours of repeated casting; this is the recommended step-up for regular practitioners who want reduced arm fatigue.
Entry-grade (1G) ML model; lure ceiling 1 7/16oz (40g) places this in SLSJ territory. Serves mackerel, small hairtail, and similar lighter-run species. At 163g rod weight it is heavier than equivalent XR5/XR7 builds but provides the core LSJ blank feel at a ¥17,820 entry price.
Longest 5G model; 10' length at 155g rod weight suits elevated breakwaters and surf platforms where a longer rod raises the tip above wave turbulence. Flex-tip section (RF action) handles minnow and vibration plug work alongside conventional jig presentations.
