The Mountain Stream Model is Major Craft's FFB (Finetail Fine Blank) sub-series built specifically for tenkara-adjacent lure fishing in tight, tree-lined Japanese mountain streams, 渓流 (keiryu) fishing. The target is yamame, iwana, and amago trout using micro-spinners, small spoons, and minnows in fast, shallow water. The angler profile is someone working up narrow rock-choked streams where overhead casts are impossible and underhand flip-casts or pendulum casts dominate. Short lengths are the defining characteristic.
All blanks are carbon construction, UL power, RF (Regular Fast) action, 2–6 lb line. The FFB-562UL+ steps slightly above the rest with 2–8 lb line and 1/32–3/8 oz lure range, suggesting an extended-duty model for slightly larger streams or heavier current. Fuji K-series guides with SiC-S rings handle the light lines without groove wear. High-grade cork handle with an offset for underhand casting comfort. Wood reel seat with stainless locking system is a design choice associated with traditional Japanese trout aesthetics.
Five spinning models, all UL, RF. Lengths span 4'2"–5'6", extremely short by Western standards. The step-up from 4'2" to 5'6" reflects a range of stream widths: the 4'2" and 4'6" models are for the narrowest boulder-strewn gorges; 5' and 5'3" for standard keiryu; the 5'6"+ model for slightly larger mountain streams. Casting versions is absent. Not suitable for open-water trout, bass, or panfish applications.
Deeper Dive
A closer look at notable models.
Shortest model in the series. Built for the tightest gorge situations where even a 4'6" rod would catch branches. Swing-casts and pendulum rolls are the intended delivery in cramped quarters.
Only model with a '+' designation, showing a slightly stiffer or more capable blank than the base UL spec. The wider line range (to 8 lb) and slightly heavier lure ceiling (3/8 oz vs 5/16 oz) serve larger streams or bigger target fish.
