The Major Craft Native model, sold under the Trapara (TXS) series, is a native trout rod lineup for Japanese stream and lake trout fishing made for yamame, iwana, amago, nijimassu (rainbow), and sakura masu (cherry salmon). It is made for anglers moving through mountain streams, small headwaters, and open tributary channels, with a range that extends to lake fishing and main-river presentations for larger fish. The series is part of Major Craft's entry-level Firstcast-equivalent Trapara brand. Blanks use medium-modulus carbon as the main material, which Major Craft describes as providing the appropriate flex for both casting and fish-fighting, a compliance that aids baitcasting delivery for newcomers and absorbs the fight of large fish.
Spinning models carry a fast (F) action for precise casting control, transitioning to regular-fast (RF) in the heavier and longer models. Baitcasting models use RF action for easier load and delivery with small lures. Multi-piece constructions are standard (2-piece for most; 5-piece telescope models for pack use). The TXST furidashi (telescope) models include a semi-hard case. The 13 models split into 9 spinning (TXS-), 2 baitcasting (TXS-B), and 2 telescope/furidashi (TXST-) models. Spinning models run 4'6"–8'2" in UL, L, ML, and MH power, stepping from tight-quarters headwater UL rods through open-water ML models and ending with an 8'2" MH cherry salmon/lake rod.
Baitcasting models are both UL at 4'6" and 4'10", designed for tight-stream finesse. Telescope models (4'6" and 5') mirror the smallest spinning models in a pack-friendly format.
Deeper Dive
A closer look at notable models.
Short baitcasting model for flip and underhand presentations in dense streamside cover. RF action softens the blank for easier baitcaster loading on ultralight lures.
Shortest spinning model for small headwaters, bushy creeks, and source streams where casting room is severely limited. Fast pace upstream fishing in tight terrain. Handles small minnows and spinners.
5-piece telescope model matching the TXS-462UL in length and spec. Packs to 35 cm with semi-hard case included. Designed for backpack-in source stream fishing and high-traversal mountain approaches.
Longer baitcasting model handles a wider range of stream sizes, from tight headwaters to moderately open channels. Major Craft describes it as suitable for both short-range and distance casting with a baitcaster.
5-piece telescope pack rod at 5'. Packs to 38 cm. Slightly more range than the 465 while still fitting in a standard backpack or carry-on. Semi-hard case included.
Described by Major Craft as an ideal first rod for the full range of stream situations, light enough for UL lures with sufficient casting range to reach the opposite bank. A general-purpose entry-point model.
Long-reaching L model for main river and technical mid-river trout fishing on 7 cm-class minnows and spoons. Useful for larger yamame, iwana, and rainbow in moderately open runs.
Heaviest and longest spinning model. Targeted at cherry salmon (sakura masu) and lake nijimassu on spoons and heavier minnows up to 23 g. RF taper reduces fatigue during a full day of long casts.
