This sub-series is part of Major Craft's EgiZaust 5G (EZ5) shore eging line, specifically the "Short Length" category within the shore eging range. EgiZaust rods are designed exclusively for eging, the Japanese method of made for squid (primarily Japanese flying squid, Spear squid, and Oval squid) with weighted jigging lures called egi. The short 7'8" length, unusual in an eging lineup that typically runs 8.3"–9'+, is intended for anglers working tight spaces, rocky shorelines, or situations where accuracy matters more than maximum casting distance.
The EZ5 generation uses Toray T1100G carbon sheets, a high-strength, high-modulus nano-level carbon fiber that achieves both stiffness and light weight. The blank structure employs Major Craft's R360 construction, in which carbon fibers are oriented at multiple angles (0°, 90°, and oblique) through the full blank cross-section instead of just surface reinforcement. This resists twisting under the snap-and-pause eging action. Guides are Fuji SiC with stainless or carbon frames depending on model; reel seat is Fuji VSS.
Action is designated RF (Regular Fast), characteristic of eging rods that need some tip flex to absorb squid takes without pulling the lure away. All three models share 7'8" length; models differ by power: L (3/16–3/8 oz egi #2.0–#3.5), ML (3/16–7/16 oz), and M (1/4–1/2 oz egi #2.5–#4.0). This maps directly to egi size selection by season and location. Casting rod variants in this sub-series is absent.
Deeper Dive
A closer look at notable models.
Lightest model, L power made for smaller egi sizes (#2.0–#3.5 range). Suited for early-season or high-pressure situations requiring delicate presentation with lighter egi that allow subtle action. The softer tip is more forgiving of light bites.
Stiffest of the three, M power handles larger egi up to #4.0 for autumn peak season when squid are larger and heavier lures improve sink rate. The extra backbone helps impart sharper snap action on bigger egi.
