This batch groups two Major Craft SLJ (Super Light Jigging) sub-series: the Giant Killing 1G SLJ (GK1SLJ) and the New Solpara SLJ (SPJSLJ). Both intended anglers pursuing shallow offshore species, sea bream (madai), grouper, grunt (isaki), and yellowtail amberjack, with small metal jigs in the 15-100g range at depths typically under 80m. Casting models in each sub-series double as tachiuo (hairtail/beltfish) jigging rods with higher jig weights via their /TJ-rated variants.
GK1SLJ blanks use intermediate-modulus carbon in a low-response (slow-recovery) design intended to reduce angler fatigue and prevent hook pulls on soft-mouthed fish. All four GK1SLJ models are 6'4" one-piece with a removable grip section. SPJSLJ models use a similar intermediate-carbon design; spinning models come in both grip-removal and standard 2-piece configurations ("2" suffix). Both sub-series use Fuji K-frame guides. SPJSLJ blanks are described as having a thickened butt section to handle unexpected large-fish encounters.
All 12 models are 6'4". GK1SLJ spinning models handle 15-80g (UL) or 20-100g (L); GK1 bait/TJ models handle SLJ jigs plus 30-200g tachi-specific jigs. SPJSLJ mirrors this structure. The UL variants target lighter jigs and delicate species; L variants extend to heavier jigs and hairtail jigging. Spinning and casting configurations address different technique preferences instead of different fish or locations.
Deeper Dive
A closer look at notable models.
Widest-range model; handles 20-100g SLJ and 60-200g tachi. Manufacturer notes this as the most versatile SLJ rod in the GK1 lineup for deeper water and multiple techniques.
Bait-cast SLJ/tachi dual-use model; Regular (not fast) action. Handles 15-80g SLJ jigs and 30-150g tachi jigs. Regular action suits the slower rhythmic retrieve used in hairtail jigging.
Heavier-rated GK1 spinning model at 102g. Handles up to 100g jigs; suits deeper water, heavier tungsten jigs, blade jig retrieves for sawara (Spanish mackerel), and broader target selection.
Lightest GK1 spinning model, 99g. Handles 15-80g jigs; manufacturer serves shallow (under 50m) reefs and mid-water schools of grunt and sea bream. The low-response blank softens the fight on light-wire hooks.
Two-piece bait SLJ/tachi model in the Solpara line. The 2-piece design adds portability for travel to offshore charter boats; identical jig range to grip-detach version.
Entry-tier Solpara equivalent of the GK1 UL spinning. Same jig range (15-80g), grip-detach system, 99g weight. Priced below GK1 at approximately ¥10,600.
