The Major Craft Surf Game model spans two generations of the Flatrek series, FR1 (1G-class, entry-mid) and FR3 (3G-class, upper-mid), unified by their purpose: light-tackle surf jigging for flatfish, primarily flounder (hirame) and flathead (koce) from sandy or mixed beaches. The Flatrek name itself combines 'flatfish' and 'trekking', reflecting the Japanese surf jigging approach of walking long beach sections probing structure. The FR3 generation uses higher-grade carbon (Toray T1100G is referenced in the wider Flatrek family) and an R360 blank wrapping process for improved weight-to-strength; the FR1 is the accessible entry point to the same technique.

Both tiers use regular-fast (RF) action as the consistent design choice: sensitive enough to detect flatfish bottom contacts through PE line, stiff enough to drive hooks on a long-distance strike. Line ratings in the 10–20lb range match domestic PE #0.8–1.5 setups standard for this technique. Lure weights cap around 40–50g for jig heads and sinking minnows. All are 2-piece spinning rods. Five models total: two FR1 (10', 10'6") and three FR3 (10'3", 10'8", 10'10"). All cover M to MH power and 10–10'10" length, a narrow length window appropriate for Japanese surf jigging where line management over breaking waves matters more than distance.

The FR3-10102MH at 10'10" is the longest and heaviest-spec option; FR1-1002M is the entry access point.

A closer look at notable models.

FR1-1002M Spinning · 10' · M · RF action

The entry-tier 10' M model; FR1 (1G) construction makes this the most affordable way into the Flatrek system. Handles jig heads of ~7g to metal jigs ~40g, versatile enough for both standard hirame jigging and sinking lure work. Delicate tip designed to feel current changes.

FR1-1062MH Spinning · 10'6" · MH · RF action

The MH entry-tier option; firm bat and belly section compared to the 1002M, designed for strong current and high wave surf conditions where the softer M model loses bottom-contact feel. Shared lure range with the FR3-10102MH but at a lower blank specification.

FR3-10102MH Spinning · 10'10" · MH · RF action

Longest and most powerful model in the batch at 10'10" MH. FR3 (3G) upper-mid tier construction; lure ceiling extends to ~50g. Suited to fishing through strong shore break, heavy current, or where heavier jigs are needed to maintain bottom contact in surf conditions.
