The Trekking and Traveler Glass model (FTG) is a compact multi-piece travel rod series within the Finetail Native line, designed for anglers carrying rods on hiking and backcountry trout trips. The concept serves mountain-stream trout fishing (yamame, iwana, amago) in remote locations accessed on foot. Both spinning and baitcast (BFS) formats are covered, acknowledging the growing use of baitcast reels for short-range stream work. The primary differentiator from other Finetail models is the travel-friendly multi-piece form factor and a switch-style length adjustment system.
Blanks are constructed from UD (uni-directional) fiberglass, lighter and crisper than traditional woven glass while retaining the compliant, fish-absorbing bend that reduces hookoffs on light trout tippets. A Switch Style feature consists of a separate 6-inch carbon butt extension included with each rod; attaching it converts the rod to a longer configuration, giving two distinct fishing lengths from one rod. Fuji guides and an offset full-cork grip are fitted throughout. Baitcast models include an angled grip to facilitate underhand and flip-casting technique.
All four rods share UL power, RF action, and identical line (2-6 lb) and lure (1/32-5/16 oz) ratings. The lineup is a 2x2 matrix: spinning vs. Baitcast crossed with two base lengths, 4'2" (extending to approx. 4'8") and 4'6" (extending to approx. 5'0"). Five-piece construction gives a packable stow length. Baitcast models are BFS-oriented for finesse micro-lure presentations in tight stream quarters.
Deeper Dive
A closer look at notable models.
Spinning version of the 4'2" base model, extending to approx. 4'8" with the optional carbon butt section. Suited to the most confined headwater gullies and gorges. Five-piece construction keeps pack length minimal for long approach hikes.
Baitcast counterpart to the 42 spinning. At 4'2" base it pairs with a BFS reel for accurate underhand and flip casts in heavily vegetated stream corridors. The offset cork grip is angled to facilitate this casting technique.
Spinning model at 4'6" base, extending to approx. 5'0" with the switch butt. Covers slightly wider stream environments where a little extra reach aids lure placement and mending across current seams.
Baitcast model at 4'6" base, extending to approx. 5'0" with the optional butt. Provides slightly more casting leverage than the 42 baitcast for open pocket water while retaining multi-piece packability.
