The Major Craft Finetail WORKS TUNE (FGW series) is a premium native trout rod line within the Finetail brand, sold as a collector-grade or passion-piece product for dedicated stream trout anglers. The name "Works Tune" implies a custom-shop or specially-tuned production variant. Released in stages (core models earlier, 5'3" models added April 2025), it serves experienced trout anglers who value both fishing performance and craftsmanship aesthetics. Priced at approximately ¥33,000–36,850 tax included, it sits at the top of Major Craft's freshwater trout lineup.
All models use natural wood handles, a distinguishing aesthetic element matched with olive-green blanks and red tartan-check rod bags. The spinning models (FGW-462UL, FGW-4102UL) use standard multi-layer carbon blanks; the 5'3" spinning model (FGW-532UL+) and its baitcasting counterpart (FGW-B532UL+) use full UD glass blanks, a deliberate material choice for maximum progressive flex and feel on small streams with larger trout. All models are UL power with Regular Fast (RF) action, all 2-piece with 71–83cm storage length. Six models: three spinning (FGW-462UL at 4'6", FGW-4102UL at 4'10", FGW-532UL+ at 5'3") and three baitcasting counterparts (FGW-B462UL, FGW-B4102UL, FGW-B532UL+).
Each baitcasting model mirrors its spinning equivalent in length and specs. The 4'6" models handle 1–8g; the 5'3" models extend slightly to 1.5–10g. All rated for 2–8lb line and fine-diameter PE. The 5'3" UD glass models are notably versatile, the maker notes they handle both small-stream UL work and larger mainstream trout.
Deeper Dive
A closer look at notable models.
Shortest spinning model. 4'6" UL suits tight, overgrown mountain stream fishing where long casts are impossible and accurate short presentations are required. Carbon blank, wood grip, red tartan bag.
Baitcasting counterpart to FGW-462UL. Straight grip design (unlike standard baitcasting grip shape). Serves anglers preferring baitcasting for precise underhand or sidearm flick-casts in enclosed stream environments.
Full UD glass blank. The maker notes this feels UL in hand but carries L-class power. Handles open-stream and mainstream trout including larger fish. The glass construction provides a different bend character, more progressive and less brittle than carbon at equivalent weight.
Full UD glass baitcasting model. Identical blank construction to the spinning 532UL+. Broadens the Works Tune appeal to baitcasting trout specialists who want glass feel in a 5'3" format.
