The Palms Altiva (アルティバ) is a JDM rod series designed exclusively for casting ayu (sweetfish, Plecoglossus altivelis) with lures, a style called キャスティングアユ (casting ayu). This is distinct lure-game approach where anglers cast dedicated ayu lures (primarily Palms' Escade series) into rivers and work them through current seams. Target angler is a Japanese freshwater lure angler comfortable in moving water. All models use X-Carbonology construction, carbon sheets wrapped diagonally in an X pattern to resist blank twist while reducing weight.
The tip section is calibrated for the specific swimming action of ayu lures in current (notably the Escade), providing enough flex to avoid hook pulls on soft-mouthed ayu while the butt carries the power to land fish fighting the current. Tangle-free K guides are used on casting and spinning models. The series carries a 3-year warranty, unusual for Japanese rods. The ALGT-600GL is a guideless telescopic pole (延べ竿 style) for use in reel-prohibited zones. The five-model lineup divides into three categories: 8'6" spinning (ALGS-86L) and bait (ALGC-86L) as the core entry models; 9'10" spinning (ALGS-910L+) and bait (ALGC-910L+ / New ALGC-910L+) for reaching stronger current and larger fish; and the 6m five-piece guideless telescopic (ALGT-600GL) for specialized river access.
Spinning favors casting distance; bait favors precise current control via clutch operation. The New ALGC-910L+ uses a spiral guide layout.
Deeper Dive
A closer look at notable models.
Long spinning model for covering water and managing line in fast current. L+ power handles heavier ayu lures and larger fish. At 121g it remains castable for extended sessions, per Palms' design intent.
Updated 9'10" bait model with spiral guide layout (スパイラルガイド仕様). Spiral guides reduce line torque on long blanks. Built for reaching large ayu in strong current from a stepped-back position. Sharp blank feel despite extra length is noted by Palms.
Guideless 6m telescopic pole (延べ竿) styled for ayu lure fishing. Allows use in reel-prohibited river sections. Five-piece packs to 129cm. Despite pole format, blank is tuned for lure action and ayu fight resistance, not still-fishing. Not interchangeable with a standard fishing pole.
