OCTOPUS LIGHT

The Tailwalk OCTOPUS LIGHT is a Japanese inshore boat series made for octopus (tako) fishing from small craft, with secondary capability for nearshore rockfish. The rod design addresses the specific demands of octopus jigging: a sensitive tip to detect the soft, often ambiguous take of an octopus on the bottom, combined with powerful butt sections to peel a large octopus off structure once detected. XH power throughout reflects the brute force required to break an octopus's suction grip from reef or rocks.

All models use carbon blanks with Regular action. The 175EGI model is a notable outlier, EGI (egi) is the designation for squid jig fishing, suggesting this model can cross over to squid and cuttlefish eging, a related bottom-oriented technique. Guides are Fuji stainless-frame throughout. The lineup gives anglers both casting and spinning options to accommodate angler preference on boat decks. Max PE line ratings and jig weights are the primary matching criteria; published specs show the S77XH accepting up to 100 g lures and PE 8.

Three models are casting, one spinning. The 175EGI is an outlier at an unspecified length (EGI designation, R action) suggesting a specialized squid-eging variant. The C72XH (7'2") and C76XH (7'9") are standard casting boat rods stepping up in length; longer blank provides more casting range and lifting leverage. The S77XH (7'7", XH, R) is the spinning counterpart for anglers preferring that setup on the water.
