The Tailwalk SAKURAMAS JIG SD is a three-rod baitcasting series dedicated to offshore jigging for sakuramas (cherry salmon, Oncorhynchus masou) in Japanese waters, primarily made for fish on deep-water jigs fished from boats in the Sea of Japan and surrounding seas. The intended angler is an experienced boat jigging angler familiar with slow-pitch and combination jerk techniques for salmonids. Tailwalk was among the earliest brands to develop dedicated sakuramas jigging rods.
All three models use full-solid carbon (FSL) blanks. The defining construction of this series. Full-solid blanks bend continuously from tip to butt, absorbing the spiraling, acrobatic fight behavior of cherry salmon and reducing hook pull during the run. The one-and-a-half joint construction reinforces the butt section for jig control under sustained load. All guides are Fuji SiC from tip to butt. Butt guides are color-coded by power class (Power 1: pink; Power 2: rose red) for quick on-water identification.
The lineup runs 5'11" to 6'5" in baitcasting configuration, all with Slow action suited to slow-pitch and combination jigging. Two models share the 6'5" length but carry different power ratings: C651 for lighter jigs and C652 for heavier jigs up to 180g. C5112 at 5'11" is the compact power option for maximum lifting authority. All are 2-piece. [JDM series.]
Deeper Dive
A closer look at notable models.
The shortest model at 5'11", handling the heavier jig range (approximately 60–180g). Shortened blank length provides maximum leverage and jig control in deeper water or stronger current, where a longer blank would sacrifice lifting authority.
The lighter-class 6'5" model, suited to smaller jigs at moderate depth. Preferred when finesse slow-pitch presentations call for a more responsive tip feel and longer blank aids casting distance to target areas.
Same length as the C651 but rated for heavier jigs (to approximately 180g). Suited to deeper drifts and larger sakuramas. Responds to a full range from classic one-pitch to tempo-varied combination jerks per Tailwalk's documentation.
