The Tailwalk SSD SURFLAT is a dedicated shore-casting series for flatfish, primarily flounder (hirame) and sole, from sandy beach and surf-line environments. The name is a compound of "surf" and "flat" (flatfish). All models use spinning configuration, three-piece construction (P3 suffix), and a wide large-taper blank design with a substantial diameter difference from tip to butt, enabling long-range casts that reliably exceed 100 m with practice. Anglers here are Japanese surf flatfish specialists who prioritize casting distance and lure control over versatility.
Blank construction uses a 3-piece design optimized for transport to remote surf beaches without sacrificing casting energy transfer. The slim, flexible tip transmits lure vibration clearly, important for reading soft-sand bottom composition and distinguishing live flatfish bites from debris. The fat EVA grip with extended butt section applies lever-arm casting mechanics to maximize energy into the cast. Fuji guide train throughout. The rigid butt section provides the punch needed for distance, while the flex-tip preserves feel on the retrieve. Secondary target species include seabass (suzuki) and other shore predators.
Four models span 10'2" to 13', stepping in length and power. S102ML-P3 and S108M-P3 are the lighter end, suited to lighter soft plastics and shallow-swimming plugs for flounder in closer surf. S112MH-P3 is mid-range for heavier metal jigs and longer work. S130H-P3 at 13' is the distance specialist, lure range tops at 2 5/16 oz (65 g) and H power handles fighting large flatfish at range. All four are spinning; Casting variants in this series is absent.

A closer look at notable models.
Lightest and shortest model. Suited to lighter jig heads and soft plastics in closer range surf or sheltered bays where casting distance is less critical. ML power preserves sensitivity for detecting flatfish takes on slow retrieves.
Longest model at 13', designed for maximum casting range on open surf beaches. H power handles fighting large hirame at distance without compromising the tip flex needed for lure animation. Regular action at this length is standard for surf flatfish rods.
