The GX2 Ice Spinning Rod is Ugly Stik's value-tier ice fishing rod, designed for anglers who want durable, functional performance on hard water without a significant investment. The primary target users are casual ice fishers pursuing panfish (perch, bluegill, crappie) or light walleye applications with small jigs and live bait. Construction uses Ugly Stik's Ugly Tuff blend of graphite and fiberglass, a composite that sacrifices some sensitivity for toughness and cold-weather durability.
PVD-coated one-piece stainless Ugly Tuff guides resist freeze-up and line fray. EVA handles are designed to stay grippy with gloves on, which is a deliberate concession to ice fishing conditions. The design inherits the GX2 platform DNA from the open-water series but is scaled to short ice-rod lengths. The two-rod lineup spans a 26" light-power model (USGXICE26L, line 2–6 lb) for finesse panfish work, and a 30" medium-heavy model (USGXICE30MH, line 6–10 lb) for larger species like walleye and pike on heavier jigs.
The length step-up from 26" to 30" and the power jump from L to MH represent a panfish-to-predator split across the two SKUs.
Deeper Dive
A closer look at notable models.
The 26" light rod is the panfish-specific option, short for controlled jigging motion, light power for detecting subtle bites from perch and bluegill on tiny jigs and waxworms. The short blank reduces tip sag when held over a hole.
The 30" MH adds 4" of length and significant backbone for walleye, pike, and larger species that require heavier jigs or need more authority on the hookset. The extra length also provides a longer, more sensitive tip zone for detecting bites.
