The Beefstick Surf is Daiwa's budget surf series, made for anglers who want a durable, abuse-tolerant stick for surf, pier, or jetty bait fishing, made for stripers, sharks, rays, drum, and other heavy-water species. User reviews describe it as a starting point for heavy surf fishing and a practical option for shark-fishing scenarios where rod damage is a possibility. Blanks are solid fiberglass, not tubular, not graphite, which gives them exceptional resistance to impact and compression but adds significant weight relative to graphite surf rods.
Construction is two-piece with heavy-framed ceramic guides. The trade-off is well understood: these blanks won't transmit subtle bites but will survive conditions that would crack a graphite blank. Price point is reported sub-$50 at many retailers. Eight models span 9' to 12' across spinning and casting configurations. Standard MH XF-action models in 9', 10', 11', and 12' cover conventional surf bait duty. The 12' BSS1202MHB is a conventional casting model for distance work on open beach.
Two outliers stand apart: the 11' and 12' XXH-power spinning models (BSS1102XXHFS, BSS1202XXHFS) with fast action and 40–100 lb line rating, these are explicitly shark and large-ray rods that use the fiberglass blank's near-indestructibility as a feature instead of a compromise.
Deeper Dive
A closer look at notable models.
Shortest model in the series. Functions as a medium-duty inshore-to-surf rod for smaller coastal species, stocked trout, or pier fishing. More practical for anglers with vehicle storage constraints or who fish multiple rod lengths.
specialized for large sharks, big rays, and heavy drum from the beach. 40–100 lb line rating requires a drum or conventional reel; solid fiberglass at XXH power is nearly impossible to break under normal load. Spinning configuration allows heavier mono rigs.
Longest and heaviest model. The extra foot over the 11' XXH gives additional height to clear wave wash, useful when fighting large sharks through a surf zone. The weight penalty of solid fiberglass is most pronounced here.
