The base ajing line, the entry tier of a family Daiwa introduced in 2005. Blanks are HVF carbon with MegaTop solid carbon tips, and weights start at 55 g for the 55UL-S, which is light for an entry rod and matters because ajing is a game of feel rather than force. Aji, the Japanese horse mackerel, are typically fished after dark around harbor lights on bare jigheads of 0.4 to 3 g dressed with a 1 to 2 inch plastic. The nearest American reference is crappie or bluegill finesse fishing, moved to saltwater and run at night, with the same requirement to register a fish that inhales the lure instead of hitting it. A solid MegaTop tip is the tool for that: because the carbon is solid rather than hollow it can be drawn much finer at the same strength, so it deflects under a load that would not move a tubular tip at all, and the take often shows in the tip before it reaches the hand. As with the mebaru line, guides are one size larger than convention to improve line release on light lures and to make threading easier in darkness. Models run 55UL-S at 1.65 m and 510UL-S at 1.78 m for close harbor work, 68L-S at 2.03 m as the general rod, and 78ML-S and 80ML-T at 2.34 m and 2.44 m for float and Carolina rigs, rated 0.3 to 5 g up to 2 to 15 g on PE 0.1 to 0.6.
Shaded band: the spread of the lineup's 5 models, as percentile rank among same-type rods. Solid line = series median · dashed ring = catalog median.
