Hard Rock X is the entry tier of Daiwa's hard rock fish range, under HRF and HRF SX. The build is straightforward and durable rather than light: Braiding X carbon tape banded over the butt section to stop twist during hooksets and lifts, Fuji VSS reel seats on spinning models and Fuji TCS on baitcasting, stainless K guides, and an end grip long enough to brace under the forearm through a fight. Two-piece lengths run about 8'3" to 9'0". Lure ratings are 5 to 35 g on the medium models and 7 to 45 g on the medium-heavy, PE 0.6 to 2.5, nylon 10 to 25 lb, blanks 145 to 167 g at 92 to 93 percent carbon. The split is even between spinning and baitcasting.
The fishery is rockfish and grouper-class fish taken from rock: harbor riprap, breakwater and reef, with Texas rigs and jigheads crawled through boulder. Daiwa's stated brief for the series is bottom feel to locate the rock, tight probing of it with worms, and butt power to turn a fish before it reaches a crevice. The nearest American comparison is heavy inshore structure fishing, closer to grouper off a jetty than to flats casting.
Baitcasting appears at this price because the technique needs it. Dragging a fish out of rock on 16 lb fluorocarbon is done by locking a thumb on the spool and lifting, not by pumping a spinning reel.
Shaded band: the spread of the lineup's 4 models, as percentile rank among same-type rods. Solid line = series median · dashed ring = catalog median.
