Hard rock fish is the Japanese shore and boat fishery for structure-holding predators pulled out of rock: kijihata and other hata (grouper), soi, ainame and kasago. The fish live inside boulder fields, breakwater legs and reef, so the tackle is built to stop a run at the instant of the bite and lever the fish clear before it reaches a hole. Rigs are Texas, free and jighead, fished on braid with a heavy fluorocarbon leader. Americans will recognize the mechanics from heavy inshore work, closer to gag grouper off nearshore rock or snook dug out of dock pilings than to open-flat casting.
HRF SX is the upper working tier of the HRF line. Blanks use SVF carbon under an X45 full-shield bias wrap with V-Joint ferrules and titanium-frame K guides. Several models carry Mega Top R high-elasticity solid tips for reading rock before a sinker wedges; the rest are tubular. General rockfish models use Daiwa's Zero Seat, in Seamless Fit form on spinning and Perming Fit Trigger on baitcasting, while the GR grouper-specific models sit on an Air Sensor carbon seat.
The spread is wide. Two-piece lengths run about 6'9" to 9'10", lure ratings 5 to 60 g, PE 0.4 to 3.0, mono 6 to 25 lb, blanks 112 to 185 g. Baitcasting and spinning are both well represented, with the baitcasters carrying the heaviest lure and line ratings, since forced fighting on thick fluorocarbon loads a trigger grip and a reel the hand can clamp.
