Tairaba, the tai-rubber fishery, has no close American parallel. A lead or tungsten head trailing a silicone skirt and rubber tentacles is dropped to the bottom and wound back at one unchanging speed, and the bite arrives as a run of small taps rather than a strike. The rod has to keep loading through those taps so the madai, red seabream, pulls the hook home against a bending blank instead of a stiff tip. Kohga EX is the flagship of that lineup, six models built with Daiwa's tairaba testers. Lengths run 5'6" to 6'10", blank weights 85 to 125 g, and every model is a two-piece with the joint in the butt. Ratings are given in jig grams, 20 to 350 g, and PE line ceilings of MAX 1.0 to 1.5, not the ultralight-to-extra-heavy scale used on American bass rods. Five models take a baitcasting reel; the C69MHS-SMT is the spinning rod, for casting away from the boat and swimming the head back on an angle. Two tip families split the range: SMT superelastic titanium alloy solid tips on SVF Nanoplus blanks for bite detection, and MegaTop carbon-solid core Thrill Game blanks on HVF Nanoplus that bend deep under load. AGS R-frame carbon guides, X45 bias reinforcement and a tairaba-specific ZERO SEAT double short trigger are shared across the bait models, with an Air Sensor seat on the spinning rod. Top guides are 5 mm and larger so spring jellyfish and drifting weed do not clog the line.
Shaded band: the spread of the lineup's 6 models, as percentile rank among same-type rods. Solid line = series median · dashed ring = catalog median.
