The Daiwa Metallia SS Series is a salmon, steelhead, and striper rod collection built for the techniques and conditions of Pacific Northwest and Great Lakes river and bay fishing. Intended anglers include drift fishermen, plug pullers, bobber-doggers, and twitchers who work medium-to-large rivers for anadromous fish. The series covers both single-hand and two-hand presentations, and spans freshwater and coastal applications. Blanks use HVF Nanoplus graphite with X45 bias-fiber construction, providing the sensitivity needed to detect subtle current-swing bites while resisting blank twist during powerful hooksets and runs.
Fuji Fazlite guides are noted for smooth line payout on long casts. Cork handles. The series includes both one-piece (7'6"–8') and two-piece models (8'6"–11'6") to accommodate travel and storage. 5-year limited warranty. MSRP $179.99–$189.99. The 15-model lineup spans 7'6" to 11'6". Shorter one-piece models (7'6"–8') in MH and L power address close-to-mid river work, twitching plugs, float fishing, and shorter drift presentations. The two-piece 8'6"–9'9" mid-range covers the broadest technique spectrum: fast-action MH spinning and casting models suit drift and bounce techniques, while M-power fast casting models serve plug and bobber duty.
The two long-rod spinning models (10'6" ML and 11'6" L) are built for side-drifting and pencil-float techniques where extended reach is required.
Deeper Dive
A closer look at notable models.
Light-power casting at 7'9" with regular action and a notably wide lure range (1/2–4 oz). The combination suggests a plug-pulling application where light power allows plug action to transmit through the blank while regular taper absorbs strikes during trolled or side-planed presentations.
Unusually light line rating (6–10 lb) for an MH blank. This likely serves a specific technique, possibly float fishing with light line and a sensitive tip for steelhead on tailwater runs, where power is needed for hookset and fight but line must stay light to fool wary fish.
The heaviest model in the lineup at H/fast with lures to 6 oz. Likely intended for large plugs (anchovy-style or large diving plugs) on salmon in big rivers, or striper situations requiring heavy lure capacity and backbone for trophy fish.
Long-reach side-drift or pencil-float model. At 10'6" ML/regular on a spinning setup, this handles controlled drifts of small weights and floats across wide river runs where extra reach maintains presentation angle and mending capability.
