The Daiwa Presso Ultralight is a trout, panfish, and light-target freshwater series covering a broad range of scenarios from dock fishing to backcountry stream wading. All 14 models are UL-power fast-action spinning rods, with the series differentiated entirely by length and line/lure rating, positioning it as a purpose-focused ultralight platform instead of a technique-diverse lineup. The series suits anglers made for trout, crappie, bluegill, perch, small bass, and similar small fish on light lines with micro lures. Blanks are SVF (Super Volume Fiber) carbon graphite with micro-pitch taping during curing, which distributes resin and fiber consistently for improved sensitivity and fast tip recovery.
The fast action across all models delivers direct feedback from small lures and light takes while maintaining casting accuracy with weights as light as 1/32 oz. Aluminum oxide guides protect line from abrasion; cork handles are spinning-specific in profile. A "-TR" suffix on select models indicates a 4-piece travel design that packs to roughly 24", a significant distinction for anglers who hike to remote waters or travel by air. The 14-model lineup spans 4' to 11' in single-piece (and some 4-piece travel) configurations. Lengths 4'–5' are specialty short-range entries for dock fishing, kayaks, or dense brush.
Models from 5'6" to 7'6" cover the core stream-to-lake trout range. The 8' and 9' entries extend reach for reservoir bank fishing. The 11' PSO1102ULFS is an unusual outlier, suited for Euro-style nymphing or situations requiring maximum reach on light line from shore.
Deeper Dive
A closer look at notable models.
Shortest model, 4' on 1–4 lb line for ultra-close-quarters panfish. Dock fishing, kayak, or dense overhanging brush scenarios where normal rod length is a physical constraint.
5' entry steps up from the 4' with marginally more casting range. Still positioned for small streams, brushy banks, and tight environments on the lightest possible line class.
4-piece travel variant at 5'6". Slightly wider line range (to 6 lb) than the non-TR PSO562ULFS, a practical choice for backcountry hiking where pack-down size is as important as performance.
6' travel rod collapsing to roughly 24". Core length for trout stream fishing in a packable format, suitable for air travel or long approach hikes to remote water.
7' travel variant with the widest lure/line range in the TR sub-group (to 3/8 oz, 8 lb). Handles slightly heavier micro-jigs and spinners at longer casting ranges while remaining packable.
The standout outlier in the series. 11' UL is positioned for Euro-nymphing-adjacent techniques, fixed-line trout fishing, or reach casting from shore over complex currents, outside the standard trout spinning application lane.
