The Daiwa Proteus WN Blue is an offshore trolling and live-bait rod series built for boat anglers made for pelagics, tuna, wahoo, mahi, and large billfish species. 'WN' refers to the Winn Grip partnership between Daiwa and Winn Corporation; the Blue colorway distinguishes this sub-series. It sits in Daiwa's mid-to-upper saltwater boat rod tier, below flagship tournament models but well above inshore duty rods. The limited warranty is lifetime. Blanks use HVF Carbon Technology, Daiwa's high-volume fiber layup for reduced mass, combined with X45 Carbon Bias Technology to resist blank twist under heavy loads.
Guides are Fuji FazLite Tangle Free K-guides. The reel seat uses a Fuji Back Stop Lock Nut System. The Winn Grip wrap is a rubberized co-polymer over the fore-grip, designed for wet-hand secure grip during trolling or jigging fights. All models are 1-piece. Line ratings are expressed in lb (monofilament equivalent) without lure weight specs, consistent with offshore convention. The 11-model lineup spans 7'6" to 8'10" in MH, H, and XH power across casting and spinning configurations. The 7'6" and 8'0" tiers offer matching casting and spinning pairs in MH and H, the spinning models carry substantially heavier line (40-80lb braid equivalent) versus their casting counterparts, consistent with stand-up spinner applications.
The 8'10" models (H and MH casting only) extend reach for kite fishing or long-leader situations. One XH casting model at each length handles the heaviest trolling duties.
Deeper Dive
A closer look at notable models.
One of three spinning models in the series. The 55-80lb line rating confirms this is a braid-rated stand-up spinning rod for offshore application, substantially heavier than the matching H casting model's 20-50lb mono rating. Suited for vertical jigging or stand-up PE-line pelagic work.
Heaviest 7'6" model and the only XH casting entry at this length. 30-60lb monofilament handling covers heavy trolling rigs, large live baits, and kite outfits made for big tuna and wahoo. Spinning equivalent at XH is absent.
8' spinning H model with the same 55-80lb braid capacity as the 7'6" spinning counterpart, but extra length for improved jigging leverage and belly management in deep-drop or heavy jigging scenarios.
Longest model at 8'10". Extended length adds tip height for kite fishing, rigger placement, or when fishing multiple lines at staggered distances. Casting only, Spinning counterpart at 8'10" in this lineup is absent.
