Saltiga Ebing

Saltiga Ebing is a two-rod set for ebing, a Japanese offshore boat technique with no American equivalent, and one that is not jigging despite using a jig. The rig is a straight spreader arm carrying a metal jig as the casting and sinking weight, with a fluorocarbon dropper of around 3 m running from the arm to a single hook holding a soft-plastic ebing worm. The jig is ballast and attractor; the fish eats the worm trailing behind it. Daiwa traces the method to Okinawa, where it was fished around payao fish-aggregating devices, and credits Daiwa field tester Seikai Murakoshi as its pioneer and as the rod's supervising designer, having adapted it as a sport technique and brought it to Sagami Bay, where it took hold on yellowfin tuna. The logic is that yellowfin and amberjack keyed onto small bait or onto chum will ignore a bare metal jig but take the small trailing plastic, and because the jig is only weight it can be as heavy as conditions demand. Two spinning rods make up the line, both rated 110 to 250 g on PE 4 to 5, a rating that covers the whole rig rather than a jig alone. The 62HS is 6'2" (1.88 m), one piece, 203 g, a short type for low-freeboard boats that doubles as a straight jigging rod and is Daiwa's pick when kanpachi are also in play. The 74HS is 7'4" (2.24 m), two pieces, 285 g, a long type for high boats, for casting at a surface boil, and for jerking with the butt in a gimbal. Both use HVF nanoplus blanks reinforced with X45.
