The Daiwa Spinmatic D Trolling is an ultralight baitcasting trolling rod series designed primarily for kokanee (landlocked sockeye salmon) and trout trolling in freshwater lakes and reservoirs. The series fits anglers who troll with light gear, small spoons, hoochies, and dodger-and-bait rigs, where a sensitive, ultralight rod tip is critical for both lure action and detecting subtle strikes. It builds on Daiwa's long-running Spinmatic lineage, updating the blank to a lighter, more sensitive construction while retaining the kokanee-appropriate specifications that made the original popular in the Pacific Northwest and Rocky Mountain states.
Blanks are graphite (designated as "Spinmatic-D" construction), cut-proof aluminum oxide guides, genuine Fuji reel seats, and genuine cork handles. The casting (baitcasting) configuration reflects the use of level-wind trolling reels standard for kokanee fishing, where precise line control at depth is needed. Both models are UL power with fast action, the fast taper ensures the tip loads quickly with the light lures used in this style while still transmitting subtle hits clearly. Line rating 2–6 lb and lure weight 1/32–1/4 oz are consistent across both lengths.
The two-model lineup differentiates only by length: SMD702ULFB at 7'0" and SMD762ULFB at 7'6". Both are 2-piece. The 7' rod is standard for single-rod trolling or confined boat setups; the 7'6" model provides a slightly wider spread when running multiple lines and a softer, longer loading section that can be beneficial when fish are hitting light on the dodger. Pricing is entry-level, positioning the series as accessible kokanee gear.
Deeper Dive
A closer look at notable models.
The standard 7' model, 2-piece. Suited to single-rod setups or tighter boat configurations. 9 guides. UL/fast combination creates an attentive, lively tip for reading lure action and detecting light kokanee strikes without telegraphing rod movement to the lure.
At 7'6" provides a wider horizontal spread when running side rods from a rod holder array, and the extra length adds a slight cushion on the strike. Lure and line specs identical to the 7' model. 9 guides.
