The Okuma Guide Select Pro is a multi-technique specialty rod series built for West Coast and Great Lakes steelhead and salmon guide applications, with additional models covering surf and catfish. The core buyer is a drift or float angler made for steelhead, salmon, and larger trout in rivers, running 6-17 lb mono or fluorocarbon on long spinning rods with sensitive tips and enough backbone to fight heavy fish on a drift. Construction centers on 30/40-ton graphite blanks with ALPS stainless steel guide frames, aluminum oxide L-ring inserts, Fuji reel seats, and 3K woven carbon fiber fore and rear grips, component quality well above the price point.
Tip-over-butt ferrule construction maintains consistent bend profile in two-piece models. The longer models run 9-11'4" and are clearly drift/float oriented; the compact 7'6" spinning models serve bank and wade anglers needing steelhead sensitivity in tighter spaces. The 18-model lineup is predominantly spinning (14 models) with 4 casting rods. Lengths range from 7'6" to 11'4". Power runs UL through H; the H models (GSP-C-902H, GSP-S-902H) handle 15-40 lb line for heavy salmon or catfish.
Long spinning models from 9' to 11'4" are all MF or M action, suited for controlled drift and float fishing. Short 7'6" spinning models in UL/MF cover light trout and panfish. The two-piece 10'6" and 11'4" models are travel-friendly for walk-in water.
Deeper Dive
A closer look at notable models.
The UL 7'6" model covers light trout and stream panfish, a different angler and application than the long salmon/steelhead models. The two-piece construction suits hikers and stream anglers.
The 1/2-5 oz lure range and 8'2" length suggest a salmon side-drifting or float rod for heavier setups, or lighter surf work. The fast action is atypical for drift fishing, pointing more toward casting presentation.
The H power / 15-40 lb spec pushes beyond standard steelhead territory into heavy salmon or catfish applications. One of the most powerful rods in the series and clearly distinct in purpose.
Longest rod in the series at 11'4". Built for long-range float or fly-line drift work on large rivers where mending line and reach are critical. Two-piece for portability.
