The Okuma Hawaiian Custom series was designed in Hawaii for shore-based and nearshore anglers made for large pelagics, yellowfin tuna, mahi-mahi, and other offshore species common in Hawaiian waters. The power ratings, line classes, and rod lengths reflect the demands of long-range casting from shore, near-shore popping, boat jigging, and trolling applications where fish over 50 lb are a realistic outcome. Blanks are 24-ton carbon construction on most models.

Guides use ALPS-316 stainless frames with zirconium inserts, which handle both mono and heavy-braid without wear. The split-butt spinning designs reduce tip-end weight for long casting sessions. The lineup is organized by technique prefix: HSP (shore popping), HWA (general spinning, likely shore casting), HWM (multi-purpose spinning, longer models), HWP (heavy popping), and HWU (casting trolling/heavy casting). Lengths span 8'3" to 14', all spinning except three 13' casting trolling models.

Power runs from M (8-17 lb) at the light end to XH (80-130 lb) at the casting trolling end. The HWA 9' models appear in standard, Pink (PK), and Steelhead Blue (SB) cosmetic variants with identical specs. The 14' HWA model serves surf casting with 12-25 lb line, an outlier in an otherwise heavier series.
